Well having had Orcon nuke my emails a month or two ago and then having very poor download rates and issues with international sites from Orcon I started to look around at alternatives.

Chorus have been installing cabinets in my area and I become removed from Orcon purple zone (saw this on Orcon website but they never told me), as a result downloads dropped from 8mbps to 2.5mbps. I phoned orcon on a few occasions to find out what was being done to resolve this issue or what could be done - and the call centre staff had no solution, in fact the last one said 3mbps is "average" and they would raise an issue only if it dropped beneath 2mbps.

So i voted with my phone and switched to Telcom, the process over the phone took 20mins, but 8 days later as they explained during the call I am now happily using Telecom.

And immediately my speed went from 2.5mbps to a consistent 16.8mbps for NZ sites.

Orcon failed for me on three occasions over the last three months: loosing my email, terrible international speeds, and then a call centre team who dont know what was happening when I raised the above issues and not being able to offer me a solution to my slow down in speed since the cabinets arrived.

A

I was also having random slow internet once the new cabinets were installed in my area but it took 2 weeks for orcon to find this out. Once they figured out the issue they changed me over and now instead of 3.2kbps I know get 14kbps :). Only problem I see is that it is ment to be F/S D/S and U/S yet I only get .46 kbps U/S max!

brookz - 14kbps...? have you had anyone look at your line? did they acknowledge a problem?

im due to be switched over to the cabinet today. so hopefully I will be able to post new line stats tonight.

Yep. Orcon won't have any kind of decent backhaul off telecom wholesale cabinets vs telecom the isp.

Basically Telecome wholesale gives telecom the ISP MUCH better backhaul than any of the ISPs. So if there's lots of people on your exchange, you'll get better speeds on telecom the ISP than other ISPs... Sad but true.

It's not Orcons fault per se.. but yeah, you'll get better speeds peak on telecom because of the backhaul telecom non-seperation bullcrap.

Don't let the facts get in the way of a good Telecom beat up.

Telecom Retail use the same Telecom Wholesale services as the other ISP's use they just handover at many more regional locations so handover congestion is less of an issue.

There is nothing stopping other ISP's handing over at more locations other than they don't want to spend the $$ to do so.

Telecom has a whole load of low usage mom and pop users to balance out the heavy users.  ISP's like Orcon, Slingshot and Xnet have purposely attracted the heaviest users and are now suffering congestion.

The minimum performance requirements that Telecom wholesale is forced (by the government) to sell backhaul and handover links at, have been set by the Commerce commission, why don't you take up the issue with them?
