unlocker: I understand I had a year to top up but I wasn?t using that 2degrees number so did not top up and on the day I requested to move my Vodafone no, on 4th Nov 2010 2degrees told me that I should be fine as long as I top up within few days and 2degrees sent me a text in the afternoon on 5th that it will expire if I don?t top up by tomorrow(6th),

It still doesn't make any sense.

1) You have a 2degrees SIM card that you weren't using
2) You had a Vodafone number on Vodafone
3) You ported the Vodafone number to 2degrees
4) A day after you ported the number to 2degrees they already expired the Vodafone number

No blame game. Just trying to understand it. Either you have not explained this situation well and there are missing information here, or 2degrees cancelled a number just a day after it was ported.

Could you please explain which is which?

As I understand it the OP;
1. Had a SIM that was just about to expire (no topup in 12 months)
2. Ported the number over to the SIM
3. Didn't top up before the SIM expired, so it did

In my opinion;

1. What the OP did was dumb.  Why would you port a supposedly valuable number onto a SIM that was known to be only a matter of hours away from expiry?

2. 2degrees is not completely without fault.  Porting a number is almost certainly an intention of continuing to use their service.  Surely something like porting a number could put a hold on the expiry of the SIM for a period of time.

And, how was I supposed to know that the 2Degrees SIM is about to expire, not until I got the text that it will expire tomorrow, so i thught I will top it up in the night as one would assume it won't expire until atleast midnight!

you said in your OP that you called them and they told you it was about to expire,  and that was before you ported your number.
I think you don't have your story straight.

SIM cards expire, not the account on the SIM? That's strange.

Well, I don't have the records in front of me, of course, but OP will have been sent a message warning about credit expiry the day before that, one on the day to say it had expired, and then 30 days later a warning that the account will expire, followed by one the next day to say it had expired.

Of course, if the SIM was in a drawer the whole time he may have missed the earlier warnings.

:D

Sims are cheap as chips... Got one for $2 the other day!

Hah, haven't seen any $2 ones still kicking around for ages!

iPad Pro 11" + iPhone 15 Pro Max + 2degrees 4tw!

Soo if you're porting a number that is of value to you, AND, you're going into the store to get a top up.... why not do it at the store, and know that it's all squared away? (even if to a new sim).

Seems to me the $10 was of more value to you than keeping the ported number.

(Soo how long was it since you topped up the original VF account?? Maybe things all just expired at the same time?????)

yeah should have topped up at store. Vodafone number was topped up recently so it could not have expired, anyways, will have to get the number reactivated at vodafone and port again to 2degrees.

I would also politely suggest that if this number is as mission-critical as you say it is, then do not rely on prepay. Go Pay Monthly (2°) or onAccount (VF).

Pay monthly is great - I received about 500 minutes last month for $39 :)

So if I don't top up for a year I loose my number? I thought I just lost the credit.

Correct. This i how prepay works, in all networks.

This entire thread is bonkers.

1. The assumption that a '$10 credit for porting' isn't a valid payment form is whack (to put a finer point on it). To my way of thinking, the consumer just assumes that he has to have the service in credit. Seems reasonable to me, accept it doesn't to others.

2. The inability to just make a sim live is whack. It's just a chip with a bunch of 1's and 0's on it. Man they built a massive tunnel under a mountain to save cutting down some trees so they could get 50 million tones of coal... given that we're a bunch of 1 and 0 experts around here, why can't we save one little bit of plastic from the round bin in the corner?

3. The inability for providers to just pull a number back into their network and light it is also whack! Sure, it's not something you might leave in the hands of the call center in Timbuktu, but these are our numbers (you know, 'New Zealanders'), yet we don't have the ability to just capture one and put it where we want it without it taking 80 hours of someones time?!

4. In the IT world you're taught from when you're knee high to a grass hopper that keeping spares in the draw for when you might need them, is a good thing. In this case it strikes me that the OP had a 'spare in the draw' and just wanted to make use of it.

After my last 2 days dealing with a simple sim problem (at least it seemed simple to me) I really can relate with the OP's pain. I would like to extend some thanks to JohnR from Vodafone for getting it sorted :)

There should be no "consumer just assumes that he has to have the service in credit", since the need to at least one topup every 12 months is clearly explained in the terms and conditions.

I have bad news for you sorry your number expired when you ported it to another carrier. Vodafone can't reactivate a number that has ported off net. When number is passed back to Vodafone it will go into the recycle pool.

It was sorted within 24 hours with the help of a very fine gentleman from Telecommunications Carrier's Forum. Vodafone and 2Degrees both did not know how to fix this and were putting on each other. 2Degrees deactivated the number on their network and since it was a VFNZ number, it would have gone back to them after up to 30 days but Vodafone staff were not ready to confirm this. At the end, the process of going back to VF was expedited and I had to port it again on to a new 2Degrees SIM. I guess, All's well that ends well.

Who dreamed up that idea?!

Numbers and domain names need some rethinking in .nz at present.

I get that .industry.nz doesn't want to play nice, the easier you make this stuff the easier it is for customers to churn and take advantage of better deals.

Next thing everyone will want IP address porting
