gjm: "All the stores that have the facility to sign up 2degrees customers have had training and should NOT be able to sign you up regardless if you are outside Akl, Wgtn, Chch and Qns. "

...um, officer of the English language part 2 pointing out a possible mistake

* Whoops! Amended, thanks. ;-)

Just to add, we are now arranging to have the OP signed up as intended.  We thank everybody for their feedback and are addressing the training issue with the stores.

Further to the above,
My wife had a call from 2D and they have offered to help arrange her a contract over the phone (inc free handset by post etc).
We were also assured that the training issues this problem has highlighted are being taken very seriously and that corrective measures are being pushed hard.

Getting the 2D contract is now a little dependant on Telecom letting her out of the contract she took with them on Friday the 14th. She's spoken to them and though they say they don't have a 7 day 'cooling of period' they should be able to cancel her out of it. This was on the basis that the free hanset she got is still in it's sealed box and of course there were all the 'why' questions.
I'll report back on how it all goes.

If it was a new 24 month contract or upgrade then there should be the ability to be released under the 30 day Risk Free Trial that Telecom runs.

It was indeed a 24 month plan and Telecom canceled it without issue in just a few mins.
The 2D contract was set up in just a few mins over the phone yesterday at about 5:00pm and the sim and handset should be on it's way in the post. I think it's an upgrade handset, to compensate for all the running around, which is a nice gesture.
Good to see someone taking customer care seriously and that complaints can result in a possitive outcome. It's all too common for big corporations to make customers feel insignificant so this has been a good experience in that regard.
I'll post back when the sim and handset arrive.

yup it seems like you are getting a good result. All businesses have problems, it's how they handle them that makes the difference as to where I spend my money.

Well, things have moved on a bit.
Last Friday a courier brought the new free handset (an LG-P500), sim, a car cradle and car charger - which amounts to a significant upgrade!.
Everything was up an running within minuets and everything is working as it should.
We've since had a couple of follow up courtesy calls from 2D, just to make sure everything was working ok.

So, in the end 2D have satisfied customers and I would suspect that there will be a lot of training going on in the outlet stores.
Hopefully this will mean that getting you're new contract is a painless task in future.

Personally I've been very surprised at the lengths 2 Degrees has gone to to sort this out. Way beyond what I expected.
My thanks to all concerned.

Very ncie to see 2degrees come out and help in this specific case, I have been following this thread for a while now.

I have recommended 2 Degrees to some of my firends and family in the past due to their pricing and managed to move atleast 4 people so far from Vodafone prepay to 2 degrees on account $29 plan and will continue to do so.

2degrees have helped me here too. I was already on their $39 plan and I rung and asked them if I could get an Ideos and upgrade my plan to the $59 which will happen at the end of this billing cycle on the 17th. I was told yes I could by one of their CSRs and they arranged for my plan to kick over to the $59 after the 17th. Well Dick Smith here in New Plymouth once again didnt know about the promo and had to go on one of their store computers to see what I was talking about. After making a couple of phone calls she said she would ring me back which I didnt hear from her so I rang 2D again and the CSR said I will hear from DS in the next day or 2. Sure enough this morning I got a call from the lady who originally served me last Sunday and said its all been sorted with 2degrees you can come in and pick up your free Ideos So a big thumbs up to 2degrees and New Plymouth Dick Smith
