There's no mystery here...

Dedicated bandwidth international (and often national too) is expensive lets say $100 /month for 1Mbit CIR.

ISP's can't buy international/national bandwidth 1:1 with user's sync rates or your monthly adsl plan would cost near $1000 /month instead of ~$100/month.

They buy at a ratio, eg: x customers to y bandwidth known as a contention ratio.

Slingshot try to use caching, prioritisation, traffic management and other smarts to provide as fast as possible service.

Bottom line:
If you go with the cheapest ISP they are going to have the worst contention ratio on their bandwidth/transit.

Slingshot have also has attracted all the heaviest leechers so you are going to get crappy peak time performance due to the available bandwidth being maxed out.

Ergo... you get what you pay for.  If they increased prices they could offer better performance but they won't for obvious reasons.

Do you know if ISP will tell you what there contention ratio's are so that you can make a fully informed decision on which ISP to use?

Sometimes I think getting broadband is like buying a box of chocolate. Even with the descriptions on the box and your experience with other brands therefore expectations, you really can't tell what you are going to get.

So, if we all new their contention ratio's would we then know what we are getting...

Upload Speed: 791 kbps (0.79 Mbps) (98.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 30 ms
Jitter: 0 ms
Packet Loss: 0 %

speedtest.net

Download Speed: 2.40 Mbps
Upload Speed: 0.58 Mbps
Latency: 415 ms

Their terms and conditions on my 40GB Full Speed Connection are:

Elite.
If you want full noise, then this is it! Full Speed up and down and a massive data cap. Optimised for ADSL2+.

What a load of absolute rubbish. The speeds I'm getting would be faster if there was a turtle with a battery attached providing bandwidth.

Im seriously considering legal action, had enough of bureaucracy on these issues, and they are breaching the consumers guarantee act by providing no where near the speeds that you would expect to pay from their marketing on their website.

Anyone with me?

ISP's typically do not disclose the contention ratio that they use for planning sadly, as they consider it commercially sensitive info.

Can't afford the legal action apparently, I hope someone gives them hell for false expectations on their marketing speak!

There is no blame directed at telecom in the NSM Summary or in the post. Telecom ADSL is mentioned because the issue is specific to the service provided via Telecom ADSL, i.e. not on the Vodafone or CallPlus LLU network.

Ok so I jumped the gun, doesn't still explain why the speeds are dreadful even though their site says full speed. I would understand the unlimited service being capped. Also slingshots big issue now is that Telecoms pricing is so close to theirs, that if I didn't have 6 months to go on Slingshot, I would transfer to total home. Even though telecom doesn't have an all you can download off-peak time like slingshot does, they have large enough datacaps to now suit the large downloaders.
