Seems like a very reasonable question to me.? What answer did you typically give?

I note that you used the word "use to hear" so I'm assuming you don't hear these questions any more?

Coverage is not worked out on the value of ones property. Building a cell to provide coverage sometimes to cover a handful of customers can sometimes far exceed the value of one of those houses and that is just to get the cell up and going not the on going costs.

I have changed jobs a few times in Vodafone over the years

Sorry guys, as this is a discussion forum and not a support line of a vendor, I thought it just polite to whack as many answers to the questions raised as I could. :)

Sorry... my bad, I was just joining dots that might acutally not join... I assumed that people with high value properly also spend money on phone calls... but I do accept that assumption could be really wrong!

richms: Why do you think that paying more for your whopwhop property guarentees you the same level of service as urban people? You sound like one of those whining farmers about broadband.

My bold - today I wasn't even expecting the 'same level' but just 'some level'.... it just didn't work.

As for the whining farmers comment, really? Do I? I've never ever even seen a single farmer whine about bb in NZ.

I've seen an article by Chris Burton from NZH about how Nelson farmers have 100mbit fibre from FX while I can't even get access to the fibre running 4 meters from where I'm sitting while I type this post, but whine? No. Sorry, you must be confused?

John first please re read my op.

I post on GZ on a Sunday nigth because FTA TV is soooo crap that chatting with ppl and sharing my thoughts from the day brings more joy.

I also choose to share tech junk like this cause other people might be thinking about buying the same phone or using a phone in the same sort of area and might like to know more.

Vendors might be interested in someones experience with the phone and the network...

Readers might be interested in the discussion that arises.

Why else would you post on a public forum?

Do you have a link to their GZ posts or is this whining just on your customer service phone lines?

Or is just just made up rant to help secure $300,000,000.00 in government funding to push out more mobile network for nothing so you can make more revenue from people making calls?

Don't get me wrong John, you know I have great respect for the personal help you've give me personally in the past and the same goes for the 2Deg rep on here.

But if you think about it, you can really see why I might be asking these questions... or perhaps you can't?

It's election year.

Broadband and telecommunications where the deciding factor in the .au election.

I'm very interested in all these issues, but I really just don't see farmers whinging in public places.

What I do currently see in the media is bidders for a pot of gold having a hissy fit at each other.

Just another random thought.... just how crap are the GPS units in these things if it thinks I'm in the middle of Spreydon?

Sure, when it's in my concrete block house I can understand.... but I was in the middle of a paddock!

whinging may not be the best word but rural folk are complaining all the time about BB speeds or that they can't get BB or they can't get mobile coverage on the other side of the 500 acre farm

It would not have been using GPS, it would be using cell tower positioning. And if you are near wifi that is positioned android will use that as well. I come up in hobsonville when I first go into maps or foursquare, I am outside the blue circle by quite a way so I cant check in to home in foursquare tillit gets an actual GPS lock, which you see by the satillite animation going solid in the bar at the top.

I watched the little sat dish do the blink thing and waited till it updated the Net Info thing... confess I really know squat about this crap at present... I just sort of assume that it would just work because it normally knows where I am.

You're kidding right? Farmers thru Federated Farmers have been a background hum of complaining since electric fences used to degrade or knock out their dialup! Hell they even complain about price ("Satellite technology at $100 a month is expensive and the quality is at times not as good as we'd like.")

As others have pointed out, Land value doesn't factor into mobile operators choice to cover an area or not, It's if there is enough people in the area to justify the costs. As it has always been in the middle of nowhere there isn't enough people to justify the cost of giving service

Again, where is this noise? Show me the lobby of farmers who even care.

Last week I talked to some ppl who wanted to jump a link 600m... the last comment I got on the subject...

"we will get up on the roof at some stage and see what we can see over the trees if anyting."

That was after I designed a whole solution for them at half the price of the one someone else quoted... Haven't heard a word.

Farmers don't care about bb. I care about it... I want access to the fibre at the end of my street, but farmers.... get off.

Yeah that is strange. I have a different Huawei model and it seems to be very accurate.

Oh come on. I know a group of people, who helped build a fibre network though an entire NZ city, who put together a whole rural broadband plan for farmers in conjunction with another group who have run transmission gear up and down NZ for over 50 years, and the whole plan got skuttled because of Federated Farmers!

Get off man... you're just winding me up now. FF don't give a toss about farmers and BB either. They had a chance to get some action with a leading group of specialists in the area with over 2 decades of proven experience working with the New Zealand farming sector and they just crapped all over the idea as I understand it.

RRB, from what I can see, is motivated by a bunch of telcos looking for a big free govt hand out and not interested farmers actually wanting anything.

Feel free to show me clear evidence to the contrary.

Most of the time I confess it is.

Once I step off the 2Deg network the 8150 I have just seems to go bonkers.

Again, I've not done any sort of testing at all. I'm simply sharing my personal experience with this thing after the second time I've had it go nuts at this specific location.
