Jump in the van, drive out to the farm, glance at my mobile that didn't work very well last time I was there and I see 'no signal'.

Where was I? - at the farm...
Did I turn it off and on: no
Did I try a network search: no

What the hell did I do?....

I hit the button to tell me where I was, flicked to Network Info II and grabed a record of the device info and throw the phone back in the van.

It's a phone, it cost me $300, not one of those $50 jobs, I only just got in last month, I just expect the stupid thing to work.

Driving back into town it still didn't find a network... why, who knows.

How much do I pay to use this phone?  Bugger all...

Should I just sign up with Telecom and use their new XT network that works while you're fishing according to their MD?  I know it does, I saw him on TV so it must be true!!!

Should I ring Mr Joyce and tell him to hurry up and give Telecom and Vodafone that $300m to fix rural bb?!?!... hold on, check out the GPS info below... where was I?  Was I in the middle of no where?

Should I just take the phone back to the retailer and ask for a CGA credit as it's clearly not fit for the purpose I bought it...  "so the wife can nag me with texts while I'm out on the farm"... ;)

Were you promised coverage in this location from your carrier including all over the farm?

Not sure what area you are speaking of sorry can you link to Google maps

Maybe its a area 2Degrees roam on the Vodafone NZ network and its only covered with UMTS 900mhz so using a 2G/GSM phone will not work.

John

even within 1.5km on the maps I dont see anything that I would call a farm, but I have seen some horridly bad positioning using cell tower around auckland on 2 degrees. I have had it put me in the CBD with me about twice as far away as the diameter of the accuracy circle.

How about you get the actual location so that someone from 2degrees can see what you should be on?

It's no good complaining about a coverage fault though when you're not able to be specific about the location!

Sorry John, I did leave out some useful crap...

The phone is a 8150 Ideos which I purchased new from Harvey Norman on Moorehouse Ave in Christchurch some time last month, don't recall the exact date.

Coverage wasn't discussed with the seller at the time of the sale. It's a phone, my last Vodafone phone worked just fine at the same location and my friends very old Nokia phone had a full signal from Vodafone today (I did take enough time to have a quick glance when he pointed it out).

The purpose of the post was simply to share an experience with the 8150.

Perhaps my expectations are out of whack that a new bit of kit I buy from a reasonable retailer just doesn't work as I sort of expected.

Perhaps I should use google earth to figure out where I was and compare the GPS info?

I'm not quite sure why you'd blame the phone, clearly the issue is that 2degrees simply don't have coverage there. If there was coverage in the past you should log a job with them as something like network optimisation has probably resulted in a changed coverage footprint.

You have answered your own question 2degrees don't provide coverage to this location on 2G or 3G but Vodafone NZ and Telecom NZ do.

If you choose to live in such a remote place and you demand service, go buy a sat phone. Why should any provider spend 150k+ for 5 customers?

Ask old3eyes on Geekzone he thinks all providers should provide 100% mobile coverage for $60 a month

Well I would suggest looking it up on 2 degrees coverage checker, but it appears they dont have one, just a hopeless map.

IMO, if there is no 2degrees at the address you need it at, then port over to vodafone, the ideos has 900MHz umts so will work fine on rural vodafone network.

a. I thought that 2Deg had a roaming agreement.
b. I'm not blaming anything or anyone... I'm simply commenting that the 8150 that I have didn't work there today.
c. If 2Deg what me to log each time I find a place that my phone doesn't work cool...  but I have no idea how to log that call...  what I do know is how to make a post on GZ!  I'm sure there's more than enough info in this thread now that they can pick it up just like anyone else and figure out what the issue is if they care...  if they don't care then they get to ignore it :)
