DonGould:
johnr: Your asking them how long it's going to take to fix something that is not even broken!

Again, I did try to suggest that it's not entirely a 'fault'.  I fully agree that if I take my Telecom XT phone to the middle of Australia where there is no mobile coverage at all, it's hardly fair to say the handset is 'faulty' now it is?

In this instance I choose the word 'fix' because my phone simply wouldn't connect to anything, not 2Deg, not VF, not Telecom - nothing.  It just dropped all the networks and gave up trying.

But the question for discussion is about the time frame it would be reasonable to expect the telcos to take to sort this problem out, even if their answer is simply to say "Hey, we'll never provide coverage there, just go find a different telco if you want to use a phone at that location".

Interestingly, so far I'm finding the speculation of GZ users quite interesting.

ps: jr - have you read your pm's tonight? :)

in that case, the answer is- months. maybe 6 months.

NonprayingMantis: how about I answer your OP question with another question

How long does it take a farmer to decide that although his provider is cheap, they are also unable to provide him with service and therefore he would be better switching back to the provider he knows provides coverage?

f the problem is lack of coverage, and the upgrades aren't already in plan, then 2D has to go through weeks, if not months, of business casing, resource consent applications, etc etc.

the farmer only has to visit a store and switch providers to one he knows works.

Interestingly there are a number of issues in play here...

1. The farmer is not the one with a problem, it's one of his 'in town' visitors - in this case me.

2. 2Deg have a roaming agreement with VF, so service on the phone should have been delivered even if 2Deg don't have service in the area.  At least that was my understanding of the deal when I signed for the new phone last November (? I think)

However I'm going to read your response to the original questions as "weeks, if not months".

DonGould:
Foo: Interesting discussion and while I don't really have an opinion on how soon/how likely the issue being resolved would take, I do wonder:

a) what is the reception like using other phones with the same sim card?
b) do the other networks provide better cellular coverage?

a - don't know. (see response to Johnr above)
b - yes - VF provide full sig at the same location on a different handset

I'm one of these solution focused guys, hence the reason for asking if it worked on other handsets. In this instance (and since you've been waiting for six weeks) I would borrow a friend, workmate or partner's handset and test reception with that handset. In the efforts of working it out, the more the merrier. If you had success with another handset, you could give consideration to changing to another handset. If you aren't prepared to do that <or> different handsets make no difference, then you can only really change provider.

As you say that VF provide full signal in the same location, then I think you may have your answer.

I use a reasonable amount of mobile data on 2degrees each month and I know that if I didn't live in one of the main centres, I'd probably still be with Vodafone. It's really a case of making the selection from what you have available. Of course, if you have signed up for a monthly plan with a 12 or 24 month contract, you would be understandably miffed.

Good luck!

DonGould:
johnr: First off does your SIM work in other handset in this location OK?

No idea sorry.  That is not something that was suggested 6 weeks ago when the issue first came up, so not something I tested in attempting to address the issue.

However, it's also not really the point of the thread.

The point of the thread is to answer the questions I presented at face value:

"How long does it take a mobile company to fix coverage on a farm?"

"How long has this sort of issue taken your mobile provider to fix in the past?"

"What's reasonable in this day and age given we're dealing with modern, smaller lighter, newer technology?"

:)

Actually - it was suggested 6 weeks ago

DonGould:
johnr:  So when you were at the farm why did you not try your 2degrees SIM in another handset?

Far to bone idle and lazy to do that...

Care factor for having the phone working was very low.

My concern was the 16 holes that had to be drilled in the new skids for the helicopter.

richms: So does another phone on the same 2 degrees sim card in the same location (make sure its also a 3g 900MHz capable phone) suffer the same issue with not getting onto either network?

Hummm :) Again, this thread really isn't about 'how Don can fix his problem' it's about "how long would YOU expect a telco (any telco) to fix the problem'.

However to address the questions, no I didn't try the sim in another handset.

richms: Till you have tried that, I am not certain that there is anything for 2 degrees to even look at, as I have heard from other people that have managed to get their andriod handsets into a state where they had no network connection till powercycled.

Interesting.  Why would anyone sell a handset that has these issue?  CGA could mean they come back at you?  Getting right OT, but interesting.

Opps, sorry Johnr, I confess I didn't even review my last thread on the issue before I opened this one...  I do hope you actually understood the pm I sent you, but I'm guessing not.

Getting back to keewee01 - sort of makes the question of time frames even more interesting when the person with the problem even comments that for his part he doesn't really even care if the thing works, doesn't it.

I did say this was a quiz, and I did simply ask for wild speculation on time frames.

John, with all due respect, this is a discussion forum.  I have made it quite clear a number of times now that I wasn't looking for help to fix the problem.  Even in the OP I made 6 weeks ago I made it quite clear that I wasn't overly bothered with the lack of coverage personally, I simply found it annoying that the 'new' phone didn't work.

Not every post I make in a public discussion forum is a shout for help with fixing something.

In this instance I was simply putting a question out for discussion, asking for speculation on how long it might take to get something done.

As has been mentioned by others, I think it all comes back to the business case and numbers affected.

If there is an issue and it affects many people - let's say 3-4 farmers (and their families) and they're all using 2degrees, then I would expect this to be resolved more quickly than just one person calling 2degrees with this issue.

How long would I expect to wait? As the issue is more complex due to it being 2degrees via the VF network, you have two providers which will increase the time to resolution. If I was optimistic and it could be resolved (at very little cost), the timeframe could be anywhere up to six months. But really, that is a bit like asking how long is a piece of string.

Hummm :) Again, this thread really isn't about 'how Don can fix his problem' it's about "how long would YOU expect a telco (any telco) to fix the problem'.

For this particular "issue", Never.

The issue getting "fixed" as a result of normal network expansion and growth, depending on where you are, months or years?

But reading everything in the threads it does not sound to me like it is a "telco issue" that needs fixing.. sounds like you got the wrong product/service.

I live in the sticks, rural area south of Auckland and know about mobile issues real well.
