Following on from my rant 6 weeks ago about coverage on a small farm just out skirts of a major New Zealand city, I'm interested to hear your wild speculation on how long it should take to get coverage improved.

How long has this sort of issue taken your mobile provider to fix in the past?

What's reasonable in this day and age given we're dealing with modern, smaller lighter, newer technology?

How many people would benefit from improved coverage on this farm? The length of time is inversely proportional to that answer....

That I know of, 1. Though there may be more users in the area that I don't know of. I'm not sure how I could provide more information to help you with your speculation, sorry.

Yeah - might never be 'fixed' if there is no money in it. How much is the farmer willing to pay?

It depends entirely what the issue is. If it's a simple case of broken hardware you'd imagine relatively quickly.

If it's an RF issue that's not related to broken hardware, and/or non existant coverage would depend entirely on how important they see the area and the number of customers that are effected.

There would be tens of thousands of people in various parts of NZ who consider their coverage to be an issue, but with the regulation we're about to see hit the NZ mobile market combined with massive downward pressure on pricing it's going to be tough times ahead for mobile players in NZ with some very tough decisions that have to be made regarding capital expenditure. Mobile coverage in a market the size and population is always going to be a tough thing, but many people don't seem to realise how great our networks actually are compared to many countries overseas.

OK - then my guess is "Never" excepting a fault.

In the same way the farmer won't invest in a new tractor unless he/she can get a return on it.

I agree with all those points.

I personally do have experience with getting coverage fixed in an area overseas and do understand those dynamics as well.

However this is a Quiz.

In providing your answers, you do need to put some numbers on the table.

3 Day? A week? A month? 3 months? 6 Months? 5 years.

Guys [1], what would you consider a reasonable time frame and expectation given the scope of the problem.

Yeah! :) Someone's who's willing to put some cards on the table.

I'm keen to hear others views. Do you agree with Mark? Do you think he's lost the plot and not being customer focused? Do you think he's on the mark supporting investor return?

Oh, sorry, my bad, I didn't really understand your question the first time you asked and failed to put scope on the question.

Um... the fault basically, as outlined 6 weeks ago is that the farm is on the boarder of the 2Deg coverage and my mobile phone would get confused about which network to select. While VF coverage in the area was good, the phone would not roam to the VF network, but would lock up and just drop all networks. Manual network selection didn't always work and the phone (an 8150) would not switch back to the 2Deg network once well inside the coverage area without a cold start.

I'd pick the chances of a resolution as possibly being slim. You're obviously outside the 2d coverage area but the local VF site(s) don't allow roaming.

Fixing this would require VF to allow roaming on the site, which probably won't happen if coverage from what site extended into the 2d coverage footprint as it could cause 2d a lot of grief if they had customers with phones continually jumping between the 2d and VF networks.

Summary so far... interesting.

I note with interest that VF and 2Deg haven't chimed in yet.... wonder if they're on line and also interested in the wild speculation or just enjoying family time on a Sunday.

I would also back the never as a resolution to _this_ problem. It may get solved as a matter of expansion or other upgrades later, but the chances of the telco putting in effort to solve problem coverage to a single user at a single property are somewhere between non existant an when hell freezes over.
