The latter only work in Akl, Wlg, Chch, Queenstown where 2degrees have their own network.

Yes you will need a 2degrees SIM, you can get them for as little as $5 from your local supermarket or dairy

2 degrees don't have their own towers nationwide. When they launched, they were only in Auckland, Wellington, and Queenstown from memory.

They have slowly added to their network and now are in Christchurch. I don't know where else.

They made a decision to launch in NZ without a full coverage of the country, and instead pay Vodafone to allow their users to "roam" onto Vodafone towers in areas where 2 Degrees didn't have their own towers.

This means that I in Dunedin, use Vodafone towers and their network, but I am on 2 Degrees. I pay 2 Degrees and have nothing to do with Vodafone, but I am actually using their services.

2 Degrees has some of the cheapest data pricing in NZ. But in places like Dunedin, they can't offer me a cheap rate because they effectively have to buy it from Vodafone at a wholesale rate, and because Vodafone data is more expensive (retail), 2 Degrees can't afford to give it me at the same price as their customers pay in Auckland.

Hence the concept of mobile broadband "zones".

When you are in Auckland/Wellington/Queenstown/Christchurch and using 2 Degrees towers, you get access to their much cheaper mobile broadband services.

Outside of these regions, you have to use "nationwide data" which is actually Vodafone data which you "roam" onto.

Hope that kinda makes sense.

Yes, remember to make sure that your contacts are not stored on the VF SIM (but on the phone instead), set up your voicemail after the number comes over.
2degrees also gives you $10 credit when the number get ported over (takes 2-4 hours typically)

National packs can be used anywhere. Broadband packs are much larger and cheaper but are only valid in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch or Queenstown.

Other cities are coming as part of our expansion this year.

Yea that makes sense.

So if i were to get that package, and 1gb mobile broadband, and left auckland for a weekend I would still have 50mb to roam with right?

Buy SIM, make any call (eg. free call 200 for customer services) and that will put you through an activation process.

Then go to the website "Your 2 Degrees" and register for an account (a password will be TXT'd to the SIM you just activated).

There you log in and request to port your number over.

They had a $10 bonus for porting valid until 31 March but it still appears on the website so looks like it may have been extended.

Salty can hopefully answer that - I would hope that "Zone" data would be used up preferentially before Nationwide data does.

While in the Zone you will use your Zone data first and then your national data once that is used up
While not in the zone you will use your national data straight away and your zone data will not be used at all

When you are in zone, we use broadband data before national data, then postpay plan data (if you are on pay monthly) and finally cash.

When out of zone, we use national data, then postpay plan data, then cash.

For cash, we use Me2U cash, prepay cash, postpay cash, in that order.

In theory all 6 kinds of credit could be used in a single data session... :-)

Edit: so, yes, in answer to your original question. :-)

so, to clairfy, I could buy the $19 plan, then buy the additional 100 mins for $30 and so pay a total of $49 per month to get 130 mins, 2000 txts, and 50MB data? (actually if I am topping up $50 then I would also be getting 500 more txts from magic topups)
Is that correct?

also, are the minutes here carryover minutes or not?

Yes, that's correct. The minutes are not carryover though. That's for pay monthly.

So say I top up $ 30, and bought the $19 pack in a month.
Once I used up all the 30 calling minutes.
For extra calls, do I get charged 22c or 44c for calls to other 2degrees friends within that month?
