Wade: People with whom i have spoken to regarding their smartphone usage patterns the overwhelming majority of them only need 50~100minutes a few texts and 200~500mb of data, I suspect this would represent the needs of the average smartphone consumer.

That's an interesting observation, but quite different to what we come across. Most smartphone users we deal with use less than 200MB data but talk for 300 minutes or more per month.

I would assume by large your clientele would be business users not domestic "off-peakers" like myself which could account for the differing observations?

At work we have 200+ staff, with maybe only 30 on company phones, most are blackberrys used solely for calls and email, of the remaining staff at least 50 would be smartphone users who don't make a lot of mobile calls during the day but are all data users. With companies stance on social media websites people are reverting to smartphones to stay online. It should be the biggest growth sector in the mobile industry?

Wade: I would like to think my usage is fairly typical of the average domestic consumer, I use 60-ish mins, 50-ish texts, & around 300~400mb of data

Sadly, however, that is not at all fairly typical of the average consumer. $50 2G cheap-and-cheerfuls outsell smartphones by a huge margin. The "average domestic consumer" is not interested in 400MB of mobile data a month. Mostly, they send texts. Hec, I get effectively unlimited free mobile data and *I* usually don't use that much.

In any case, several posters have already pointed out the reasons why the prices are what they are. We are busy expanding our coverage as we speak, so the broadband packs are available in more and more places.

As SaltyNZ says the majority of users just want a basic phone for voice and texting.

So do you think we'll ever get to a time when all plans/packs are simplified in some acceptable way?

Because we all use the call/txt/data mix differently, and that is what drives telcos to try and make one size fits most offers, that in turn create debates about not having the right mix for individuals.

And if they offer plans with customisable options, where you're trading talk-time for data/data for txts etc, but at a fixed price... then it all get overly complicated

Well, that's why we have value packs.

I tried using 2d with my iPhone but found I was spending more than I would on a telecom smartphone plan.
It was ok at home in Auckland but if I went away for even 1 weekend in a month I would have to spend at least $10 more to use data while I was away.

I will probably move back if they ever offer 1gb national data at a competitive rate.

I think the plans are are great but of course 2D can't be everything to everybody.
I am on the $39 plan. The minutes are great since I don't have to think when I make a call that it's going to cost me some exorbitant per minute cost. So when my kids text me, I will often just call them back.

The additional 50MB of data is great - with careful use of my N1 and with wifi at work and at home (and I am near free wifi in the [Wellinton] city), that is enough usually but 200MB would be nicer.

2500 SMS is way over what I would ever use. I think I average 100-150/month and that gets up there only because of those usually redundant SMS like "OK"!

I would gladly trade 1500 SMS for 50MB of data.

Staying in Wellington. Check out my AirBnB in the Wellington CBD.  https://www.airbnb.co.nz/h/wellycbd  PM me and mention GZ to get a 15% discount and no AirBnB charges.
