Orcon chief executive Scott Bartlett said the Genius was more user friendly than Skype. He said the pricing was highly competitive.

I'm sorry, but 19c/min vs 3c/min on skype for national calls is NOT competitive.

The new plans are definitely better value (for me at least) when it comes to data. But the fixed contract makes me nervous. I hate getting locked in. I think I will wait a month to see how people go first.

quentinreade: The address checker is fixed.
Thanks.

You sure? Is this a nationwide thing or purely regions that have orcon equipment in there exchanges? Because ive put in 5 addresses all across blenheim and not one of them is available.

We only cover 87% of the country. What we look for when prequaling for Genius is the following.

EUBA or LLU capable?
Does Orcon have the ability to provide a local number?

If those are Yes, then we are good to go!

Blenheim is an area we can't cover yet, as we can't provide a local number there, but Equipment is on the way to Nelson (I belive thats the major LICA for Blenheim) and should be up and working next month. You should be able to sign up then.

Blenheim isn't Genius capable at this stage.
We don't have the necessary voice interconnect at the moment.
Sorry about that.

A little more? A $100 "set up" and then an extra $10 a month for "rental". So over a year thats an extra $220. Plus if you rent like me then you need to pay again when you move house

@Orcon

You should really have a no connection fee promotion, would get a lot more people to try it out at least. Id imagine it would work out better business wise as well.

but those criteria don't equate to 87% of the country, do they?

I beieve EUBA only covers 80% (and that 80% would fully overlap Orcon's LLU footprint)

Furthermore, the RBI covers 16% (and obviously you can't sell the genius to people covered by RBI since they can't get broadband now)

I phoned Orcon to check for certain if the genius plan was available in Timaru. I was told, not yet, it covers 84% of the country, they hope to cover Timaru in the future. Sounds like only the main centers benifit at the moment.

Yes...that's just on $20 extra per month for the no contract option. That takes the gloss of it for me.

Claims of being available to 83% of the country seem a little overreaching.
For example - in the South Island it is only available in CHCH & Dunedin. That is a whole lot of the rest of the South Island (Nelson, Blenheim, Timaru, Queenstown, Invercargill - all metro areas) where it is not available.

Does anyone have a record of what the old plans were?

I was wanting to compare with what I had (Orcon Home Silver+) but in the past when I wanted to remember what was in my plan I looked at the Orcon site, but can't find the old ones.

Second question - what about phone extensions with this genius option - if I want a phone upstairs, how does that work?

Given that in my experience WiFi doesn't travel through steel re-enforced concrete floors very well - there is some signal most of the time, but not reliable enough - so while it's nice that it's a "super-styley modem with a really strong Wi-Fi signal that lets you hook up to the internet just about anywhere round the house", what about those areas outside of "just about anywhere round the house"?

Wired IP phone option?
If so, what sort should I get?
