neoprint: yep its out the back. theres a carpark near the corners of factory and church, theres a small road that goes past the phone exchange. its by mitre 10

There is definitely a Telecom cell tower right beside the phone exchange behind mitre 10. Is that the one you are talking about, or is it more towards the RSA building?

I'm surprised people aren't talking about this, would have thought Dunedin was the next largest city to go live after Auckland, Wellington Christchurch............anyone have anything to say about this?

Well, essentially it has gone live as per previous 2Degrees post, but not officially yet. The Dunedin network has been turned "on", but they are still tweaking and optimising. And Dunedin is still not a Mobile Broadband zone yet either.
My phone has been half of the time connected to Vodafone, and half of the time connected to 2Degrees for the past few days.

Hmm mine has been on 2degrees the last week, never going to vodafone.

I have found the coverage to be the same as i had on vodafone where i live.

The one on Corstorphine road suits me nicely. Full coverage now instead only 1-2 bars.
Looking forward to getting Dunedin a mobile broadband site, although I wish there was a better was to receive 2degrees news updates other than the twitter/facebook page updates - which mainly seem to be full of people having trouble texting their grandma.

Anyone know if they're doing 3G on 900 MHz on these new rollouts? I thought they might try this to get a better match between their 2G and 3G networks.

Any time you're on 2degrees coverage, the broadband packs will work. But until it's designated an official broadband zone, beware: any time you drop back to Vodafone coverage the broadband packs will stop working and you will be charged national roaming rates.

So, if your coverage is good enough that you never switch to Vodafone then by all means give it a try if you want. Just be aware that the coverage is still being optimised so it's a bit of a gamble.

@wongtop: I believe the Tier 2 sites are UMTS 900 as well as UMTS 2100, but I could be wrong.

I don't know, I work in core network design, not RF. Probably a couple of months.

If by that you mean locked out of paying 50c/MB (which it will do for you by default the first time you buy a broadband pack), then yes, that's right.

If I were to buy a Mobile Broadband Data pack (i.e. the 1GB pack for $20), and if I were connected to the unofficially live Dunedin 2Degrees network, I would be using data from that Mobile Broadband pack? Correct?

And switching between the two networks would also automatically switch between the two data packs? Is this correct?

Correct - and additionally the national pack can also be used on 2degrees. If you're in 2degrees coverage the broadband pack is used first until it's all used up, and then it switches to a national pack if you have one.

Well, I got some phone calls yesterday (my first since my ohone started picking up the 2degrees towers) and .. I hope they improve or boost the signal somehow.

Im at the railway end of Mosgiel, and have been ever since I got my first cellphone.
The calls yesterday - I was dropping in and out of the conversation which is very hard when one of the calls was a job interview (I ended up asking that person to call me on the land line)
