I had exactly same line speed issue as yours, when I was on Orcon Bronze + phone. I noticed my line speed downstream going down to 2Mbps for a couple of month before October, from 5-6Mbps initially at ADSL2+.

I emailed Orcon support and a week later get reply asked me to download their program to run a test and submit the result to them. Since then they simply forgot my case and did not come back to me with any update.

One month later, I had to switch to telecom. surprisingly, the line is now connected at 19Mbps.

Later Orcon started chasing me for $60 dollars as they say I need to give them one month notice for disconnection...

Truth is that they never lodged a fault for my case. so I will refuse to pay for the charge

What, 2mbps is not a fault when it can actually connected at 19Mbps?

Connection moved today and omfg, 21mbit!!! Much love Orcon/Telecom. So stoked.

It sounds like theres a cabinet going in somewhere around you, and thus the noize injected into your line is at the wrong end (your modem) if theres no cabinet then sounds like a line issue.

I've seen a users connection go from 9mbit to 1.2mbit because of a cabinet being installed close by, After migrating onto the cabinet the sync speeds was 23mbit.

So if your area is being put on a cabinet you will look forward to around these speeds, like main land cheese "Good things take time"

@ Nebbie I have been on a cabinet for the last 2 or so years so no that isn't the problem so unfortunately like a peach left in the sun to long it's gone bad....:(

the news so far is that another tech is coming out today at 3pm..... opps no make that tomorrow at 2pm after getting a phone call say sorry but their work load is such they can't get anybody out until then WTF there was a chorus guy outside this morning what was he doing playing tiddly winks ;)

@pyronical can you post your line stats please I'm mainly interested in the Attenuation (xx db up/down) and line noise

Noise Margin: U/D are both 12db
Attenuation: U: 0db, D: 2db

Great attenuation!! Not so great noise margin, although I am in an apartment building. Connection is fantastic though, hums along nicely.

Great attenuation!! Not so great noise margin, although I am in an apartment building. Connection is fantastic though, hums along nicely.

Noise margin is set in the DSLAM/MSAN/ISAM and negotiated between this and the modem. 12dB is used by Chorus on all their equipment, so your noise margin should show ~12dB. Some ISP's use a 6dB noise margin on their ULL gear, which can result in a slightly faster sync rate with the risk of errors on poor quality lines.

That's pretty damn great

well I finally found out what the problem is here, it's the cable between the grey roadside demark and the cabinet the chorus tech said he'd get a cable guy to fix it sometime this week (see I knew the other tech was a drongo) ...... atleast I now know whats the problem is that's a good start so we'll see what happens in a week or so ;)

New info apparently despite modem reading pointing to the contrary I am only 250mtrs away from the cabinet and to top it off the tech seems to think that what ever has been done to the cabinet to "upgrade" it is also what's responsible for the slower than normal sync rates ...... so now it looks like I'm being artificially slowed down wtf that's not what I am paying for (yes I know consumer ADSL is best effort) but it looks like it's being tampered with to slow it down on purpose ( not that I can prove it )

anyone here knowledgeable enough to know what I'm talking about please do chime in because I'm thinking about making an complaint

Hi, I doubt there is any conspiracy, my guess is they have adjusted the profile on your line to a more conservative one to reduce drop outs, but as a trade off reduced your speed from 14 to 13Mb/s. If this is what has happened and your connection is no longer dropping out then its a reasonable compromise.

Speeds are not guaranteed, and Chrous are only bound to ensure that 80% of connections achieve 10Mb/s or more. My guess is the distribution feeder your on has a large number of DSL connections on it, hence the noise is greater than ideal, hence the modem is either syncing higher (14Mb/s) and sporadically disconnecting or dismissing some bins and syncing lower (13Mb/s) and remaining more stable, the choice is yours.

Hi, unless there is some demonstrable fault on your line then quite possibly no, as I say in your ISP and Chorus's eye its over 10Mb/s so target achieved. Reality is the DSL whilst a good technology will always have compromises that effect outcomes.

In many older areas where there are high pair count feeders then noise can start working against performance even when line lengths are quite small. In new suburbs post DSL experience (ie last 10yrs) Telcos have started using multple smaller pair cables ie 25pair rather than 100pair to help control DSL noise issues.

In reality 13-14Mb/s is quite fine by current standards, next time you really need a boost then FTTH should be on your door.

Im able to get VDSL2 here but that seems like a black mail move to me

It just seems funny that for the last 2 years it's been siting around 14850~15000Kbps down and next thing I know Chorus do some work near the cabinet and whamo my sync rate drops

Tomorrow I'm going 2 house's up from me to talk to the neighbors and ask what they're getting on their ADSL2+ if they're getting aoad more than me I'm going to be very filthy indeed

Update:: Just talked to my immediate neighbor and saw what he was getting in the way of sync speed and his is 17.6Mbps so I should be getting roughly the same as him as he's only twenty or so feet from my house.... so now I'm going to ring Downers/Chorus and get them to put it right

and he uses the same modem/router as me so it's definitely not that

well thing are still not looking good both of my immediate neighbours are getting roughly 4~5Mbps more than me maybe it's because they're with Telecom for their BB one use's an Netgear DG834g wireless router the other is on an old DSL502
and both are getting way better sync and speedtest results than I am, personally I think this smacks of foul play and dirty dealings...... it just doesn't seem right that two telecom acounts get better than I am with Orcon from the same cabinet
