sbiddle: Where exactly are you located and what exchange are you being provided service from (the Chorus website will tell you this)? The availability of ports in any cities is virtually a non event now that the cabinetisation project is essentally complete.

I'll be in Henderson (off sturges road)

I've spoken to them again and they think they can get the port that the current tenants of my house will relinquish once they move out. So here is hoping. Being the eternal pessimist, I'm sure that wont be the case.

Well this was supposed to have been done yesterday and nothing happened. Still haven't received a Genius router either, so I guess I'm up poo creek. I'll just use smoke signals.

Well I can confirm that I'm on the waiting list despite the assurances I'd get that port. I knew this would happen. Very frustrating. Cannot even get a broadband connection in the middle of suburbia...ridiculous.

The worse thing is not knowing how long you need to wait for. One week? One month? One year??

So I guess the people moving out canceled their connection :(

But, think of the joy that this has brought to the other port waiter :-)

I'm very surprised that there isn't someone who has sprung up and started offering something similar to Orcon Genius but over some wireless medium.

Geez, you would think they would give it a bit of a grace period. We're probably talking about 24 to 48 hours window here. I had no way of contacting them.

Well I have line of sight to most of the Waitacks and after reading this thread im considering putting up a grid antenna to try and help someone out by sending them my broadband connection. I have tried pm'ing one person and not had any responce, so if anyone in the Waitacks cant get broadband but can see Lincoln Road then PM me.

You say mobile broadband is not an option due to expense, but have you looked at 2Degrees?

From what i can see, Henderson is part of their Mobile Broadband zone.

Their pricing is very good (IMO)
$20 for 1GB
$50 for 3GB
$150 for 12GB

Personally i was in the same boat as you, but in hamilton. and if 2Degrees was here at that time i would have jumped on this until my ADSL line came live.

The speeds are not too bad either (especially here in hamilton) so will provide you a pretty good surfing experience.

Hi Jaymz. Yeah hadn't considered 2 degrees. Those prices aren't terrible. 3 gigs would at least keep us able to do some light surfing, browsing, use my work vpn etc. I may look into that since Orcon wont even tell me where in the queue I am.

By the way, how long were you waiting for?

I mentioned it before, but we (Compass) do wireless in this area...

Voice and data. 20 GB Broadband (5Mb/1Mb), wireless homephone & free local calling, Voicemail & Caller ID for about $99 a month.. Not as cheap as ADSL but a good short term or temp solution..

yeah, and the data packs that you buy last for more than 1 month. i think they each have their own expiry time (3months or longer from memory)

I use my 2Degrees Mobile stick around hamilton, it is great when i need to check stuff.

I was on a waiting list of about 12, the wait time was going to be 6 months, but i managed to get connected within about 4 weeks (by means i cannot express in a public forum).

Not as bad as one our clients, who lives about 20 mins west of Whangarei.
ADSL is available in their area but the waiting list is known to be around 1 & 1/2 to 2 years.

This client finally got onto ADSL broadband with Vodafone after waiting almost 2 years.
Everything was great for about 3-4 months then one day their broadband stopped working.
After a few calls and checks by Vodafone they found that someone had taken their port, not sure how it happened, and they had to go back on the waiting list! Nothing Vodafone could do about it.
Vodafone did come to the party and give them a Vodem but where they live the 3G signal is not the best so they don't get much more speed than dial-up.

jaymz:i managed to get connected within about 4 weeks (by means i cannot express in a public forum).

On another note: did the vodem have the same amount of data as the adsl would have had?

You could also get them to activate/install DSL on a second line to your house, such that they could choose/change their plan at will, and not affect yours at all. That is if you are in a cabnetised area or an exchange area with available ports.

I guess this is how WISPs start...
