surfisup1000: Yes , I recently tracked down unexplained overnight internet usage to chrome.   Chrome was happily chewing 3MB/hour unattended -- 2 pc's with chrome were eating 6mb / hour.   Not much for an hour, but, extrapolate across a month and it is not inconsiderable.

Actually, it sort of is. That would only be about 4GB = $8, with that usage 24/7. This guy is talking about $1,300 worth of overage charges which must be in the vicinity of 650GB or approx 1GB/hour!

Edit: Oops, should've read the rest of the thread first! :)

It wont be chrome.

Your wifi is being stolen or you really annoyed someone on the net are you're getting DDOS

Due to it being over a large amount of time I'd say its more that your wifi has been compromised.

I'm surprised at how a few people seem to find it necessary to be judgemental about this, without knowing all the details. Thanks to the people who have been more helpful, though.

This is the traffic for part of last month. Note how consistent this is, as a graph it would be almost flat, and totally swamps any normal web usage, which for me was actually lower than normal since I've been busy with other things.

While BT traffic might approach this if throttled at the client, I doubt it would ever be this consistent. Note the blip on 2012-02-13, which is a BT movie download IIRC.

I know all my neighbours, and know most of them very well. If the elderly neighbours are downloading Coronation St over wifi I would expect it to vary much more. The only thing I can think of is that recording or playing multiple shoutcast/audio streams (maybe a dozen or so) might do this, but that would show up as a different protocol.

I think that Orcon's protocol usage graphs would be a useful piece of information in figuring this out, I'm fairly sure they'll show the majority of the traffic is http web traffic.

One other question - is it likely that most of this traffic would have been cached by Orcon, in which case it would be almost entirely within Orcon's own network? How could you tell?

I find it very hard to believe that Chrome would be capable of consuming that much data simply by refreshing.

Are you running a Wifi network? If so, I'd recommend going over your security settings as 600 - 800MB/hr is what I would expect from someone latching onto your network with relatively average - weak Wifi strength.

I'd also recommend checking for any background processes on your computer that may be running. Running a network monitoring program would help. I personally used Net Limiter Network monitor but I understand that there are quite a few programs around that can do this.

Zeon: Just ahd a look at our Router and we have used about 6TB in the last month for a service we only pay around $700-$800 a month for with at Orcon which works out around $0.13/GB (and includes a lot of other stuff too). Pretty sure they are creaming it on the usage charges, especially for EUBA or LLU connections lol.

O.o

Telecom quoted me over $4000/month for a 100 Mb/s connection, so you have a good deal there! Unfortunately, after 2.5 weeks Orcon still hasn't reponded to a request for pricing...

But I digress!

Look at the Orcon UFB pricing to see where things are headed.

i assume he wants it now, and not years down the track.  knowing how cheap things could get doesn't make $4k any more affoardable.

Yup. After Orcon announced the UFB plans yesterday I immediately asked - again - what sort of premium I'm looking at to get fibre in ASAP. Three of my neighbours are also interested so we may end up splitting the installation bill.

Re: Chrome having a fit. This happened to me once so I can confirm. I even tracked down the problem. It was a banner ad on the cricinfo website that literally seemed to just go into a spaz and download gigs of data. It downloaded about 5 gigs of data in half a day.

Needless to say I installed an ad-blocker and that solved that problem.

I can confirm the issue is caused by http://yacy.net/en but may occur with other sites (possibly Google+).

I have adblockers and flash blockers installed.

Very high, constant network usage when the Yacy information pages are loaded, continues even as background tab. Occurs with Chrome on Ubuntu and Windows 7, but not with Firefox on either platform. Dunno about IE, can't bear to use it.

Loading this website causes data to be continually downloaded from 141.52.175.12 (which is the search portal itself) and the speed of the download seems to be limited by the available bandwidth.

I can reliably replicate this at any time. Could others here confirm, and maybe somebody technical give any further insight as to what the problem actually is?

I cannot access that page (from xnet). Chrome > [Spanner] > Tools > Developer Tools > Network tab might be useful to you.

yip happens to me too..

it keeps requesting http://141.52.175.12/NetworkPicture.png? again and again, seemingly in parallel.. about 4 or 5 times a second for me.  on 10 megabit sync, with a total file size of 256kbytes .. so basically at line rate.

This is not a Chrome problem. This is not a flash problem. This is not an ad problem. That image is being reloaded constantly by a script, showing their peer-to-peer network status on a second by second basis.

Just right-click the image, select "Inspect Element" and you will see in Developer Tools that the image querystring is constantly being changed by a script.

Solution: stop visiting that page. Or block that image.

Continuing... That seems to be a P2P-based search engine. Basically if you install the software your PC will be part of their search engine, indexing, etc. It will use YOUR bandwidth.

This is the same as someone who a couple of years ago complained about his braodband using gigabytes, when "nothing has changed". When pressed, yes, something was installed... He was running a TOR exit point, in his "effort to help the free speech".

There you go.
