Thanks I rang them up and the customer care person said I can keep my static IP when I switch. They're just finishing installing the cable tubes up the street. So now 2D will ring me up and let me know when the process can get started (in March). We're about 30-40 metres From house to little grey tube it will be coming from, worried they might charge me for having a longer than standard install. :p looking forward to fibre tho.

Just switched our Fibre over to 2degrees and so far its working pretty good and not found a reason yet to go asking for a Static IP.

In terms of the public facing ip address, are these meant to have DNS names? Doing a nslookup on it comes back with nothing.

Hi, DNS names are something you choose to do, that said, anyone could put an A record for anything against your IP address.

I switched to 2degrees fibre a couple of months ago and was never told about the CGNAT they now use, despite making it very clear that I worked in IT and work from home. I only found out when I tried to setup remote access to my PC that things were not the same as with my old Vodafone connection. I tried a couple of times to get them to take me off CGNAT because they didn't disclose it at the time of signing me up. The first time I inquired, the call centre agent was really helpful but their manager blocked their attempt to give me a static IP for free. The second time I tried it was an immediate "no" and my only option now is to pay the $10 a month for a static IP. Seems like they don't do any freebies anymore.

Change ISP since its not fit for purpose? Voyager have a 1 off cost to get a static assigned and IME are a great ISP for support on the odd occasion I have had to call.

I switched from 2degrees VDSL to stuff fibre as 2degrees flatly denied that I could get fiber at our current address the week it rolled out, Stuff had phoned the week before live date as I had inquired with them earlier. 6 months half price and the only IP address change i've has was in the first week when I was attempting to get pfsence up and running well.

Other than the static IP they have been pretty good, and its a good package I get. With Enable networks providing the fibre to the house, 2degrees give you 200/100 for the 100/20 price, plus they give you Amazon Prime Video free for 12 months. I'll review what's available from the other ISPs when my contract with 2degrees expires though.

Is there any specific requirements/constraints on your remote access setup that would require port forward i.e. a VPN server? There are options for remote access that don't require port forward and work ok with NAT - perhaps open a new topic to investigate this?

Remote access to your PC? How so? There are a couple of ways to work around things via proxying access else something like Ngrok - https://ngrok.com/. Really depends on requirements.

If you use RealVNC - you can access via the cloud which does not require ports to be opened etc.

AnyDesk also works behind CG-NAT.

Also note - 2degrees had Gigabit for $85/mo where Voyager is currently $99 per month. If you need a Static IP then just pay the $10/mo, you're still $5 per month better off.

When I had a cgnat based wisp installed at my place, I pushed so hard for a public ip.

To this day I haven't actually required one. I've since moved and still access all my servers running in the rack there without an issue.

I mainly run over zeroteir for an SDWAN layer routing both layer 2 and layer 3 as required.

I then have anydesk and team viewer (I know ugly. But it's still handy for mobile) for any time I need to physically be in the desktop and don't have connectivity.

Only thing that doesn't work great with it is a family members Linux downloads... And well, that's a bonus ;)

One off 14.95$ for a static on voyager. Otherwise a dynamic ip is allocated.

CG-NAT connections are now the norm (and have been for some time) for a large number of RSP's because for 99.9% of users there is no need for a public IP address.

The people in this thread had varying results, and they were existing customers... A new customer definitely wont be getting any freebies. lmao.
