Highly doubt my "fault" is the sme as Aaroona's.

I must say since that last outage the other day my speeds have been back to normal even during peak times.

Any issues today, just seems my net is dropping every 5 secs i don't get booted off my speed goes from 500Kb/s to 0 and then suddenly back to 500kbs its sorta like a roller coaster atm im just watching streams.

Happy to say that our connection goes full speed all times of the day, was downloading the Guild Wars 2 beta last night at FLS. Having problems with Westpac timing out this morning though :/

HI Guys,

I'm currently on the Xnet "Torrent Plan" it comes with 75 GB off peak (2am-8am)

I'm seriously considering changing to the slingshot $60 unlimited plan.

I regularly download more than 75GB (usually by FTP client) and never suffer any drop in speed - my biggest concern is that once I change, Slingshot won't live up to the speed and expectations I have for braodband set by Xnet.

If I download more than 100gb am I going to be penalised or anything? ANyone on the unlimited plan stuggle with speed?

I FTP off my seedboxes and usually get 120kB/s per stream over 10 of them offpeak, it drops heaps in peak times and if my torrents locally are seeding then it really hammers the FTP speed.

7-800 gigs a month?

I still find 720p Youtube to be unwatchable with the vast majority of older and less popular videos. Oddly enough, it seems to be worse with the local caches (forcing an AU cache 'fixes' things in the morning, but doesn't help during the evening.)

There's also a noticeable decrease in off-net speeds during the evening for most types of traffic.

For example WxC/vodafone/Woosh/Internode/EOL/Citylink at ~11:30PM last night.

WxC/EOL now:

If you plan to do your downloading in the morning or during the day, you probably won't notice much of a difference. However, if you plan to download/stream during the evenings, it seems to be somewhat of a lucky dip whether or not you'll get good speeds.

Thanks guys, certianly food for thought.

I have been downloading FTP from a seedbox too, and if I get a 350mb video file in inder 30 mins then I'm happy. I do virtually hardly any streaming.

Sounds like I may not be disappointed?

I just need to figure out how to retain my phone number. I have naked broadband with calling with xnet

Is this whilst you have a torrent going?

When I have a torrent running I see this behaviour. Will see the speed of the torrent slowly climb then suddenly boom it drops off and all internet activity is affected. For about 15-30seconds then repeat. Can take a minute or two (sometimes longer) before it climbs to a point where its cut off again. If I stop the torrent I dont see this behaviour - everything works great. Figured this was their way of throttling the torrents but its a shame it affects all traffic. I just schedule my torrents for the small hours now (got to keep the wife happy).

And to pre-empt the question: No I haven't logged it as a fault since (as I stated) I figured this is to be expected on the unlimited plans as their way of throttling traffic. If someone from Slingshot thinks I should log it let me know and I'll happily do this. I can VERY easily reproduce the results and provide pretty pictures etc (though I really dont want to have to deal with the helpdesk and the "have you reset your modem" type things because "yes I have done all that").

Edit: would also like to add... I dont mind the torrents being throttled, but I really dont like it affecting all my other internet traffic. This even affects browsing to the point where pages don't load or error etc. Would prefer my torrents to slow to a complete crawl but still have reasonable browsing and youtubing in the evenings.

I have seen this sort of thing with various types of traffic (including bittorrent and FTP), but it has never affected other traffic at the same time.

In other words, I've had downloads where the connection/s time out or are prematurely closed - but this hasn't stopped me browsing or downloading from other sources at the same time.

For example: Connections from source A would stay active for around 30 before the transfer would stop. It would 'resume' 20 seconds later when the software made new connections. During those 20 seconds I could still browse just fine and download from source B (which would exhibit the same behaviour.)

If torrenting was killing the connection entirely - and not just slowing it down a fair bit - I'd be looking at the software settings (such as making sure any upload isn't saturating the connection and that the connection limit isn't set too high) and the modem/router (that it can handle the number of connections being thrown at it.)

I don't torrent i didnt move to an umlimited plan to be a pirate, i use youtube alot and also watch Twitchtv when i was with telecom i was hitting the cap within a week so i changed.My speed is ok now can watch 1080p streams with no buffering.

Our flat just hit the 400GB mark.

And still, matter what time of the day we use the internet, we seem to hit line speed on everything. Line speed to us is 1.3MB/s Its fantastic!
