I signed up for Orcon's 'free fibre' promo when  it was first announced (about this time last month).

Got a call last week to lock in Sept 10 as our installation date. I can live with that.

Got another call yesterday pushing it out until October 31, stating that they "don't have techs free until then". Not so happy. I can understand that there can be delays but... that would give me all of two months 'free fibre' (and that would be after a 16 week wait for installation). Their customer servive has been appalling - trying to get a straight answer has proved to be a fruitless exercise.

What really gets my goat isn't the excessive delay, it's that they are still signing people up on the 'free fibre' promotion, full in the knowledge that consumers will gain absolute minimal benefit from said promotion. They even acknowledge my concerns but say "there's nothing we can do". BS! They could change the terms of the promotion or extend it, or at the very least put a halt to it.

Based on my experience there will soon be people being signed up on the premise of 'free fibre till 2013', who won't have it installed until 2013.

Hi there,

Firstly, please accept my apologies for the delay in getting your fibre connection set up.

I definitely appreciate your concerns surrounding the free fibre promotion. Unfortunately we are restricted by our suppliers technician availability so it is not always possible to get the connection up and running as quickly as we would like.

It is more than likely that you were speaking with our Helpdesk or Sales contact centre agents who wouldn't be in any position to extend the free fibre promotion. I'll pass your comments on to the Marketing team for review.

Cheers,

Cam

Hi Cam,

Thanks for the reply. TBH what you just said... that you'll pass across to marketing and take a look into the promotion, would have been enough from customer support. Like I said I can live with the delays, but being made to feel like you are (as well as others) being taken for a ride - being sold on something that is barely capable of being delivered, just ain't cool.

Thanks again.

Wow Cam, that was weak. Anyone got a wet bus ticket? Sorry, we are restricted by our suppliers. That is what your helpdesk said. I will pass your comments on for review - I feel so much better...

enozkeeg: If Multiple people at Orcon, and multiple respected members of the forums HERE have told you EXACTLY the same thing, perhaps instead of whining you could just take a deep breath and realize that, it is the way it is, and not some conspiracy to dupe you out of a few hundreds dollars of freebies!

Perhaps use your time to understand the processes involved in the project.

How this thread has carried on for so long as beyond me.

That is condescending rubbish. Since when were you the one to decide what we can talk about? We do know what the problems are and know there is no conspiracy but the fact remains, Orcon are STILL advertising a sign up incentive that for many (most?) will be worth very little, or maybe nothing. How is that acceptable practice?

There is nothing to stop Orcon from modifying the incentive or discontinuing it. Either action would be more honest than what is in place now. It wasn't the potential customers that dreamed up this impractical scheme.

It's really not condescending. Where does the promotion state how MUCH free time you are getting and where is the law that says a promotion has to provide x amount of value?

If you don't like the promotion don't use it. Simple. 6 Pages of bellyaching is just pointless.

I think the points have been made ad infinitum, Orcon has heard what people have to say.

The promotion as it stands is probably equivalent to saying buy 12 months and we will give you 1-2 months free. Not every location will have a large lead time and Orcon don't control it. I am NO fan of Orcon, but this thread is just covering the same ground over and over.

As to whether I decide what gets talked about here, nope, but I am entitled to my opinion same as you.

in my opinion, it seems like a 'bait and switch' where the advert very strongly implies that you can get 4 months or more of free fibre, but in reality it is going to be less than 1 month

Even if not intentional originally, if they know wait times are 3 months+ then they should change it IMO

Im in one of the areas that has access to Fibre and Orcon says I can sign up.

One thing that isnt clear on the sign up form is the "installation". Is this free assuming you have a stand alone house on the street with Fibre running past?

At the bottom of the sign up page it says this;

"I understand that the price for installation needs to be individually quoted.
Installing fibre means getting new fibre optic cabling run into your house. This will require a technician to visit your site on a day decided by you to complete the work. They will need to work out the best way to install the fibre line at your premises and in accordance with any particular needs you may have. Some houses are more complex than others so the price may vary."

So do I have to pay for the install even if its a basic install?

No, installs currently are free. Read some install posts on the UFB sub-forum.

I decided to take up the offer and rang up to book an install. I got a ring a week later advising the next available install date is the 1st of November Frown

When queried the sales rep said that it is due to a lack of trained fibre installers at Chorus.

Never mind, I can wait I guess :)

My install date is next Tues. Looks like there are plenty of Chorus installers in the Camborne area! For two days this week there have been up to six Chorus vans parked near the fibre distribution cabinet close to my house. My guess is that they were training on how to blow fibres down those little tubes.

If I am one of the first around here, I hope they know what they are doing! Guess I'll find out soon.
