Ditto... but warning to those who think they can get it.... are you down a R.O.W ? ;) Sorry to burst some bubbles.... but I doubt Orcon will foot the bill of digging up driveways so you can get free UFB :)

nice offer, but fixed term until 30/6/2014, that means that if you sign up with them now to get the first few months free, you are forced to stay with Orcon for almost 2 years.

It could payoff, but considering other ISPs haven't announced their plans yet that is fairly risky.

Tempting as Snap have been dragging their heals getting us connected to UFB, whereas it looks like Orcon are ready to go now.

Pays to read the terms and conditions, especially No. 7:

Promotions Terms and Conditions
Orcon Free Fibre Promotion1. The Orcon Free Fibre promotion (the “Promotion”) commences on 18 July 2012 and ends at 5pm on 31 August 2012. To be eligible, fibre must be timetabled to be available at your address prior to 30 November 2012 and be within Orcon UFB zones. However, Orcon cannot guarantee the date of fibre availability at your address as we rely on the information provided to us by the relevant Local Fibre Company which may change. Accordingly, you may not be eligible to participate in the Promotion even though you have pre-registered through the pre-qualification tool on our website.

2. You will be liable to pay for any installation costs in relation to your Orcon fibre connection. These costs will vary depending on your premises and your requirements. The majority of installs will be free, but a range of factors including distance from the roadside will impact the cost.

3. Once connected to Orcon Fibre, under the Promotion you will receive monthly credits on your Orcon account up to 1 January 2013 to the following value:

1. For Customers on an Orcon Fibre@Home plan: $75 per month inc GST

2. For customers on an Orcon Fibre@Work plan: $129 per month plus GST

4. You will be liable to pay for any charges in additional to the relevant monthly amount set out above.

5. After 1 January 2013 you will be charged at the monthly rate of your chosen Orcon Fibre Plan.

6. A fixed term contract applies under the Promotion commencing on your Orcon Fibre connection date and terminating on 31 December 2013. Early termination by you at any time prior to 31 December 2013 will incur a fee equivalent to the total charges which would have been due for the remainder of the fixed term. You acknowledge that this termination fee represents a genuine pre-estimate of the loss that Orcon will suffer.

7. Please note that properties with shared access or land ownership (cross lease, units, shared driveways, etc) cannot currently have fibre connected until our fibre installers define a process for getting permission from all parties.

This is rather interesting considering I was told by the Chorus Rep at the Orcon UFB Breakfast that installs until the end of 2012 where free at which point the CEO of Orcon piped up about trying to get them to extend this, So perhaps the entire thing is free on the dime of Chorus.

I seriously doubt it's costing Orcon anything.

Stuff: Orcon chief executive Scott Bartlett said uptake of UFB had been slow, and the company wanted to challenge ISPs to offer free installation permanently.

Orcon currently has less than 200 customers on fibre, and Bartlett wants to get people to switch because he believes consumers will not go back to copper.

*Facepalm*

Of course uptake is slow when Orcon is busy turning away potential customers. I don't have fibre, I want it, and I could be prepared to pay for installation* ... but I can't even get an estimated cost out of Orcon let alone an installation!

*Fibre isn't in my street yet but depending on the cost I could be prepared to pay for it. The existing copper is on poles and a couple of neighbours have indicated that they could chip in with some money too. I know that it'll be expensive - although not as bad as underground - but I haven't even been able to get so much as an estimate out of Orcon.

would be pretty hilarious and/or sad if you sign up for this promotion, but cannot get an install date until 15th December, giving you about 2 weeks of 'free' fibre.

Deloying fibre to a single street in a scenario like that simply isn't an option. The costs would far exceed what I would presume your budget would be.

Chorus has told me that it's doable but that I need to get an estimate through an RSP. Even if it is horrendously expensive, I should be able to get this information; for all Orcon knows I could've won Lotto.

@ Scott B - No Sh*t Sherlock. And it's not just Orcon, no other company seems to have info about fibre. The whining press release by SB is bloody annoying for me, and I assume for others, as those of us who know what we want can't actually get it, and then for Orcon to bleat on about lack of uptake...

Even so it would probably only be existing P2P infrastrcture, not GPON so you wouldn't get access to UFB GPON pricing.

You could be right; I've dug up my conversation with Chorus and it only mentions "fibre" and "UFB", not GPON specifically (I see from Crown Fibre docs that P2P can be referred to as UFB).

Just to clarify my grizzle: I'm not complaining about pricing. If I can't afford fibre at this stage then that's not Orcon's fault. The only thing I'm complaining about is how difficult it is to get information.
