maslink: To be honest I think you'd have a pretty hard job to get me to change ISPs

Naturally there are a lot of people out there that won't want to switch, but hopefully there are also a lot of people in my position: My current ISP apparently has no plans for fibre, and I'll be switching to someone that does as soon as it comes into my street this October...

Yeah, they don't seem to be in any hurry to get new customers and they're a little pricy but I still get great service as far as ADSL2 goes (about 30 ms faster to California than my previous ISP, TelstraClear). But we're getting a little off-topic here :)

I'm going to just quote a comment i made when bigpipe asked for suggestions, edited with DSL stuff removed:

eXDee: If your customer forecasts are going to exceed your allocated pool sizes, and CG-NAT seems to be a necessity, i suggest that you begin implementing it standard, and anyone who wants an actual IP can simply request this with a couple of clicks in a web control panel. This means that anyone who needs it can get it easily, and should help out with the shortage. Add the ability to easily make the IP static on that note.

On the note of control panels, try and create a user control panel that allows the customer to do as much stuff as possible. Anything that would usually require a phone call to request, that could be automated, add to the control panel. Intial suggestions:
-Request IP (as per above)
-Request Static IP
-Account details, including adding authorities on the account via web interface (telstraclear used to have this, very handy)
-Easy step up and down plan
-Easy access to all past payment history, and bills (pdf?)
-Credit card payment (if relevant)
-Direct debit setup
-Internet banking setup
-If ever implemented in the future, obviously email and voip controls.
-Change of address request
-Support ticket system where a customer can have an easy conversation view with the support team. Optionally allow this to become a live chat if within business hours and support staff are available. If you can somehow still allow a conversation view in control panel, as well as email based responses as well, that would suit many people who prefer using email over web forms.

Obviously human intervention is required for many of these things but you can at least automate the requests for it into support tickets. Every request involving such is logged in the support ticket view.

All i can think of atm, but the idea being to look at every common support case, and see if it can be turned into self service. This maximizes customer control and minimizes load on the help desk.

And to add a few things on from iinet's control panel in australia:

This facility allows you to enable or disable port blocking on your ADSL / Dialup / Naked DSL account. The following can be toggled: Port 25 (smtp) inbound and outbound Port 80 (http) inbound Port 135 DCOM SCM inbound Port 139 (netbeui/ipx) inbound Port 443 inbound Port 445 Microsoft Windows File sharing / NETBIOS inbound
These ports are commonly used for security exploits and denial of service attacks. If, however, you would like to disable port blocking on the above ports, you can do so by clicking the toggle button below. Note: Please be aware that it may take up to 15 minutes for your port blocking settings to take effect.

Theres a connection manager page which tells you your currently connected IP address, uptime, a remote disconnect button, and history.

For every change which needs to go through to the wholesale equipment (Telstra AU) they give you a full log print out of what each request is doing on the wholesale equipment. This is great to see when stuff gets provisioned and plans get changed. It also told me that it was failing at provisioning it automatically and so i knew to call up and ask.

An add or remove contract page, where you can pay a termination fee to get out of a current contract, or enter a new contract in exchange for rewards - a month or two of account credit, a 3G USB modem with data, a new Wireless Router, bonus data pack etc.

Consider offering different unlimited plans. A cheaper one that has CG NAT, and traffic shaping. Marketed to people who basicly just do web surfing, youtube ect and don't want bill shock or slowdowns.

And a premium one with a public IP and no traffic shaping.

Offer the option to do data accounting on a weekly basis instead of monthly. For example: A plan that has 20Gb of data per week, with the week starting on Monday. This means that if the kids spend too much time on Youtube over the weekend, and the internet gets slowed down due to exceeding the data cap. The internet will be back to full speed on Monday for the parents who need it for their work.

I think their (Fyx) abrupt stop of global mode is probably to blame for lack of growth.

Nope. 100/100 is $50 wholesale, and anything faster costs more (assuming Chorus). I'm pretty sure that that's excluding GST too.
