jakenz: So I've had my s4 with 2D t2p sim fail 3 times over the last few weeks: repeated 'please try again' error. Have had to switch back to snapper card each time. Anyone else?

I catch a bus twice daily and it's failed around 3 or 4 times over the past 2 months. It's a real pain because it means I have to carry my regular snapper anyway which ruins the point.

Yep I hear ya. Posted this while (p*ssed off) on bus just now. A service one can't rely on isn't much of a service at all.

I regularly have NFC turn itself of, could this be the issue here? I get in the habit now of checking before the bus arrives that it's on.

Unlikely. If your NFC is turned off the phone won't even register on the snapper reader on the bus.

I don't take the bus very often but the last one I took I got the dreaded "please try again". It only said it once and after that refused to even recognise the phone.

Fortunately this time the money was not deducted from my phone.

I used my backup card.

It is a shame the phone snapper is not reliable. I'm not sure, however, that "physical" snapper cards are any better. My wife tried to use her "old" snapper card on the cable car recently, it didn't work and the cable car staff just said they had been having lots of problems.

This morning on the bus into work it failed in the most annoying manner - logged on OK, but wouldn't log off (tried both front and back readers) but got the error message. Penalty charge coming my way. Again, again.

Ahh, of course, good point, no NFC and you wouldn't at least get the Please try Again message.

I also had the error where I could log on but not off just the other day and got a penalty charge. Pretty well considering letting my phone snapper run out and going back to the physical card.

I actually complained about this to snapper some time ago and I was told to try using one of the readers at the front of the bus as the back ones could be a little flakey.

Anecdotally the one time my phone at the time failed to tag off at the back I could at the front *shrug* worth a shot for anyone having issues.

Hey everyone,

Our apologies for coming late to the party, but can hopefully now be of some service to you all. A few things; With the Cable car, we are aware and cable car have been advised that older native cards (the cards without a ‘+’ in the corner) do not respond reliably to the gate readers. This is a similar case with these cards and Snapper Mobile. Due to this we provide a swap out service- You can swap your old card out for a new card and have the balances transferred over at your local iSITE http://www.snapper.co.nz/contact-us/ for free.

In regards to the Galaxy S4’s - unfortunately they have proven to be challenging with some bus readers in the wild. Our CEO sympathises with you all more than anyone as he commutes daily using an S4, and has taken to carrying a backup card for the times the S4 proves temperamental on the readers. We know this is not ideal and the issue has been resolved in the S5 from our experience. We have had some S4 customers come in to HQ to test the devices on our test environment bus readers. In our experience the handsets tend to work fine. Obviously our test environment bus readers have not had the adventures the ones in real life may have had and presumably this is one reason for the behaviour. It is clearly erratic and is not replicated on parking, retail, taxis or when reading an external card. One thing we have noticed with the S4 in particular is the NFC aerial is located in the battery, which is located in the bottom third of the handset. Presenting the battery area to the fish on the bus reader gives the best result. Rest assured the handsets are tested thoroughly, including randomly on buses in the wild, before release as a Touch2Pay compatible handset. We are sorry for these inconsistencies are doing what we can to resolve them. Thanks team snapper for the candid up a date - that is all we users can ask for. Here's a live anecdote that I think nicely illustrates the capabilities and vagaries of your service (at least with the s4):

- tagged on with card - out of credit
- tried s4 (relegated to backup duties) - fail
- used s4 to recharge my card (w understanding driver)
- paid with card

Has anyone got touch2pay working on i9505 running non TouchWhiz based ROMs?
I have a i9505 running Android 4.4.4 Google Play Edition custom ROM.

Quite happy about this tbh! I hadn't realised that the S4 wasn't fully supported.

I went to the Porirua store about a year ago and was told the sim card should work and was charged $5 for a replacement touch2pay sim. It still didn't work so I assumed it was a faulty card. Went to the Lower Hutt store approx 2 weeks later and was sold another sim card for $10 (why the price difference? I don't know) but that still wouldn't work. All this time I had thought it was a faulty S4 and whenever I tried calling 2degrees they put me onto Snapper and then I'd call Snapper who would refer me back to 2degrees so eventually I just gave up.

Not that I use snapper all that often but I'll head into the Lower Hutt store again tomorrow and buy a new one to see if I can suss it out! :)

Changed to 4.2.2r2 2degrees rom, sim is recognised as a snapper card (at least the top up part)
