Seem on Snapper blog: "New Touch2Pay SIM to support Snapper on a wider range of 2degrees handsets"

Snapper and 2degrees are pleased to announce the new version of the Touch2Pay SIM which will bring the Snapper service to a much wider range of handsets, from Monday 17th March. From close of business today (12th March), the current 2degrees Touch2Pay SIMs will no longer be sold. There will be a few days during the transition where Touch2Pay SIMs won’t be available in-store.

The new Touch2Pay SIM will now allow Snapper to work on the following handsets that are on sale in 2degrees Wellington stores.  A free Touch2Pay SIM is provided when you purchase one of these mobiles:

This is in addition to the following handsets which already support  the current Touch2Pay SIM as well as the new SIM:

  • LG Optimus Net
  • LG Optimus L5
  • LG Optimus L7
  • Huawei Ascend Y201
  • Samsung GALAXY Note II
  • Alcatel OT-922

Existing Touch2Pay SIM users

If you are successfully using the existing Touch2Pay SIM in your 2degrees mobile then you do not need to swap this for a new SIM. However if you are using the Samsung Galaxy S III and you receive the ‘Not found’ message on the widget when you restart your phone, then we recommend that you get the new SIM at no cost from a 2degrees store.

Non Touch2Pay SIM Users

If you have one of these supported devices, are an existing 2degrees customer, and wish to use Touch2Pay you can swap your existing SIM for a Touch2Pay SIM at no cost.

Woohoo!! Finally! One of the main reasons I purchased my Note 3 through 2 Degrees has finally eventuated! (Your phone has to be running the 2 Degrees firmware for this to work.)

Just curious, do the new sims need nfc and the phone to be turned on?
(I never had the old sim), but I heard the phone doesn't even need to be on for it to work.

The phone does not need to be on but NFC does (at least that is what they said at the launch).

Good to see that the swap is free for customers with compatible phones.

The NFC must be on. If the phone is off the Snapper will still work but NFC must be on all the times.

No nexus support yet? Also I'd like to see snapper use Android's new card emulation API.

Nexus devices don't support any access to the SIM card Secure Element. And cloud based SE is designed for Mastercard/VISA payment based services where it is about authenticating/approving a transaction - I am not sure a stored value service like Snapper (where the actual $ amount is stored in the SE and modified there by the transaction) would be able to use it.

No joy with the phone switched off
I tested the "switched off functionality" yesterday of the new snapper sim with my S4 on a Wellington bus. Wanted to know if I can rely on this to get me home if my battery is dead - cool idea.

So with the phone turned off (but with NFC function confirmed on in settings, the app installed and $50 credit loaded and showing in both the widget & full app) - no joy.  The bus T2P terminal did not recognise the Snapper T2P chip in my phone despite me trying multiple times to the annoyance of the bus driver. Used my snapper card instead for that trip as no time to boot the phone.

Will experiment/try again with google wallet settings, phone placement to see if somehow user error was to blame...

Could you do your experiment with a parking meter? They don't have anywhere to go.

Ha nice idea will do and report back ;)

(For the record first time round I expected it to work per comments above.. gave up after maybe 5 seconds of attempted swipes, but was worth trying as even on the s3 t2p on the bus could be finicky. Even 5s feels like an age in bus timeframes.. )

Nope, no joy with the parking meter's snapper reader either when the S4 is switched off.

Note I first successfully confirmed that the S4's NFC sim talked to the meter with the S4 switched on. No issue there, immediate recognition of the S4 on the meter.

Never mind. Just great to have this world-leading tech collaboration (2D + Samsung + Snapper + Wellington buses) finally implemented the S4.

Note for successful T2P use when S4 is on:

  • the default NFC payment method of "SIM wallet" should be unticked (i.e. doesn't work when it is ticked - expect this overrides the Snapper method)
  • use the original Samsung battery or at least one you know has an NFC antenna in it necessary for the NFC sim to talk to other NFC devices (the 2D shop guys mentioned this when I picked up the sim. I have a backup aftermarket 'Momax' battery for the S4 which has no NFC antenna/doesn't work at all.

btw 2Degrees firmware isn't strictly a requirement, almost every ROM I've tried on my S3 worked with snapper, and the ROM I'm currently using on my S4 is working great with the new SIM cards.  It's all down to having a specific library available on the ROM I think and by the looks things the library is now in most Sammy firmwares.

Just a heads up that the Lambton Quay store doesn't have any of the new sims in stock. The customhouse Quay store does.

Just been playing around with a Snapper Feeder, the reader does not detect anything with the Phone switched off as Jakenz has observed.  It does however successfully detect and read the card whilst the phone is booting and before Android has fully loaded.

Correction to my post above.

Just got on bus with s4 ON with settings as above. Bus reader recognized it but said please try again.

After multiple attempts with same result (and interested bus driver) I speedily changed the nfc setting to apply "sim wallet" as default. Bingo it worked.

So at face value at least different settings needed for parking meter vs bus
