Shock: This does concern me a bit. As a Snap customer I have received excellent service since day 1. As a 2 Degrees customer I received awful customer service and this ultimately led to us leaving them. I do hope it is Snap that influences 2 Degrees in a positive way rather than the other.

As a current Snap customer (and past 2degrees customer) I know just how you feel. The thing I really hope is that Snap keeps its high standard with providing broadband (this is what I pay for) and not start cutting costs left right and center to gain customers - yes, talking about network contention and customer service.

Well Vodafone doesnt try to be the cheapest and has the worst customer service sooo...

I don't really think 2degrees tries to be the cheapest either. They try to be fair.

The one that tries to be the cheapest is Skinny, and even they have good customer service

Well I for one hope that we don't lose our "Ralph's" - they have been extremely helpful to a lot of people in the past :)

As for 2degrees, I used to be with them, but got sick and tired of the poor reception so went back to telecom...

Hope as others are saying, that snap continues to be sorta separate...

2degrees had poor reception because they were new and didn't have enough towers. That has now improved although I don't think it is as good as Spark and Vodafone's yet, Mobile coverage will have no affect on Snap as they use fixed DSL and Fibre lines.

manhinli: They're bound to consolidate under a single name later down the line, right? If so, what will it be?

2degrees Mobile (Two Degrees Mobile Limited) may drop the 'mobile' part, but that will make for domain name problems again, unless Two Degrees the winery considers otherwise; unlikely just like when 2degrees first launched.

(I'd like the domain to change - 2degreesmobile.co.nz is looooong.)

Is it possible they will just keep running both brands? Like Spark/Skinny/Big Pipe...

I really don't want to see "Snap" being dropped:(

I think some people have short memories about how expensive mobile charges were (esp on prepay) before 2degrees started.  Every mobile user in NZ has benefited even if they don't use 2d.

not a chance. the Snap brand has maybe 10% brand recognition at best, whereas on the other hand EVERYONE has heard of 2degrees.

NonprayingMantis: hehe,  worst kept secret.

I wonder why they found $26m from, considering they were moaning about not being able to afford spectrum last year for, IIRC, $22m

Probably down the back of the fridge I expect.  When I lose something, it's often fallen down the back of the fridge.

(Callplus bought Orcon for around that much last year. I bet Callplus would rather have bought Snap if it had been up for sale then)

I actually asked 2degrees this question back in October when they were running that Prepay top up promo.

Every top up gives you a chance to win prize, I forgot what prizes were but they were pretty sweet.

I think they used this top up dollars to bulk up their bank account, it takes time for Prepay credit to become company profit due to accounting rules so they now can use this money.

It's taken them about 4 months since last October so to me it makes sense.

I wonder if we'll see full-blown prepaid internet? No contracts, flexible packs, and you can top it up the same way you do phones. A bit like what BigPipe does but without the need for a credit or debit card.

An approach like that should enable 2D to attract those currently without fixed line connections, instead of having to battle other ISPs for their customers.

Starting to get a bit off track, but the CEO said in a video interview on the NZ Herald site that it wasn't that 2Degrees didn't have the money for 4G, he just had more profitable things to put his finite pot of cash into.

They obviously expect Snap to be more profitable than a double dose of 700Mhz.

I'd say that's a good call. 4G is little more than gimmick value for most people - its absence is far from a deal breaker.

I have nine 2D connections, all under great deals. Over the past couple of weeks I have been shopping around as I do feel the lack of proper 4G coverage is not worth the monthly saving when compared to VF.

Once you rely on 4G within the CBD on a daily basis, moving to 3G in the suburbs really hits hard. We go through around 25GB per month, so more 4G coverage would most likely increase that number hugely! Surely that means more money for 2D.

If they release dates for their band 28 LTE network, that would at least make me feel happier.

All of which puts you far from the average 2 degrees user and I'm sure you wouldn't want to fund the infrastructure almost on your own. I just can't see the payback being there for them.
