That certainly is true but why does the 7490 registers 5 dB more attenuation noise than another device plugged into the same jack point/wire?

I'm not so sure if that is a difference in chipsets?  And arguably speaking, would the 7490 not sync higher if it were to also only see 18 dB vs 23 dB?

Attenuation isn't the only factor when it comes to determining sync rate.

So this is what my stats looked like a while ago:

And this is what I'm getting today:

And just for good measure, here's today's spectrum:

Hmmm I just noticed the increase in errors (ES) on the Fritz!Box, I wonder what's up with that?

Erik,

Have you asked 2degrees to run a extended line test on your connection? From this post it looks like your bit loading on the safe upload band (0-50 tone range) is where all your upload is currently situated and on your secondary upload band i can see little to no upload there. (800 - 1200 tone range). This might show better details as to why its not staying steady on the upload.

An explanation for why the chorus tech got a better sync than the fritz box is that the the TP-Link can sync that upper band but discarded that approx 3 mbit of sync as errors/bad packets on transmission. The fritzbox will usually only sync to what it knows it can successfully send within its loss margin. If you compared the errors/packet loss over two extended line tests, between a Fritz and that TP-link, you would see the the Fritz has lower sync/ less errors | TP-link has higher sync/more errors.

If you have had two different fritzbox with the exact same issue, statistically your leaning towards impossible that two are faulty in the exact same way, must be a line issue.

In terms of what to do now, If you have another VDSL modem, that syncs better, plug it in, extended line test again, compare. Ask 2degrees what sort of errors and bit loading they see on the Extended line tests, ask them to log a request with chorus to check in on neighbouring VDSL connections for what their sync is. Based on this info get them to dispatch a tech to: make sure the wiring is def up to scratch, change circuit port, replace the master spliter.

You should let DLM do a full cycle if possible too, that is if there is no spontaneous re-syncs happening, otherwise not much point.

Don't know if this helps, had a similar experience at my last VDSL connection. Sucks fibre is so far out.

Good luck, let us know how you get on.

So, after plugging in the replacement 7490, my sync rate went down to something like 16 Mb/s down and 200 Kb/s up. Not bad coming from 32 Mb/s down and 2.3 Mb/s - lets just forget about the Chorus tech saying I ought to be getting 5.5 Mb/s upload for a minute.  Rang 2 Degrees, they did ... something? The modem reconnected at 26 Mb/s and 1 Mb/s, still not quite what I used to get. They said, leave it for a week so that the DLM can stabilise and it should go up.

A week came and went and I'm still very much on 27 Mb/s and now 1.3 Mb/s so not that much has happened.  Gave them another ring and they said that they started a 24-hour line monitoring test as of 09:00 AM this morning and asked me to call back tomorrow after 10:00 AM.

I'll admit, I feel like I'm getting the runaround a little bit here but okay, I'll call them back tomorrow. Somehow it just feels like I had this discussion 4 weeks ago already. And then 3 weeks ago. And last week....

well given there is not much more they can do why do you keep calling back? all they are doing is resetting the port and waiting to see if DLM will do its thing, and from the results you are constantly seeing that seems to be the best your current modem will give you

havent we told you this already?

Sounds like 2degrees have done a port refresh, this will basically cause DLM to restart among other things

Well, it's safe to say that someone did something. I'm now down to 26 Mb/s download and 314 kb/s upload.

Sounds like DLM is doing as it is designed to do and trying to balance stability and performance.

Unfortunately as with anything automatic, it does not always work in your favor...

I have given up on 2D sorting out my 7490. I upgraded from 7390 getting 20M down and 1M up, 7490 arrived and while download only dropped to 19M upload tanked to 330Kb/s. Plugged 3790 back in and speeds when back to normal.

Initially they were great, talked to someone who went thought settings including factory reset and senior tech checking as well. They did 24 hour tests on both modems and said would pass on to their specialists to look into problem 6 weeks ago. I requested update few weeks back and have had no reply. I saw the odd setting being sent to modem so I guess someone was playing with it.

Gave up over weekend and installed an old Telecom modem which currently connected at 24M and 1M so even better than the 7390. Annoyed that have gone 3 months with pretty crap internet with nothing offered from 2D due to issue with their supplied router.

Well I have sourced another modem, a Netcomm NF10W with the Broadcomm chipset as the TP-Link Router that the Chorus Tech used and which gave way higher sync rates... but I'm now also waiting for the RJ12-to-RJ45 cable I had to order as my jack point is RJ45 and the NF10W expects an RJ11/RJ12 plug for the DSL port. (Only the Fibre WAN port has RJ45 - opposed to the 7490 which uses an RJ45 for both the Fibre and VDSL port.)

So cable is underway and as soon as it's here I'll finally be able to get the NF10W going and see how that goes.

I've already starting migrating all my email from my old snap email account to a gmail account in preparation of ditching 2 Degrees all together. I'm off to Big Pipe in the near future.
