Next variable is the NIC and it's driver. Another computer to try would be good.

I have (sort-of) tried that as the speed limit is the same on iphone, macbook air, macmini and even the orbi (which uses speedtest.net).  I'll borrow a windows pc at some point to try another wired connection though.

Hiya - Can you PM me your delivery details and I will arrange to send up a Mini PC for you to test with (all you need to do is plug it in, and it will dial home), that way we can path a way forward and put this to bed one way or the other.

Nick.

Do you have any firewall restrictions (software on the mac or rules on your router)? That can affect speedtest.net when all ports are not open.

Hi All,

As confirmed, a PC will be on the courier today to test - To be clear, we can't do this for every customer (We have performed thorough testing recently as per https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=85&topicid=236439&page_no=6), however given the nature of the configuration (using the 2nd ONT port) and limitations some providers have with their configuration, it will be good to see the results and validate accordingly.

Hi All,

Mini PC arrived and installed today = Testing results are in. On the Netgear (customer supplied) on the 2nd ONT port we were seeing 600MB down, via the Fritzbox (2degrees supplied on 2nd ONT port) we saw the desired results as follows:

hey nick,

as a side question, why do you opt to use the HTML5 interface rather than the app based versions?

Atleast in our testing, we have found the app to simply not get caught up in all the browser junk.

Often saves having to go down the path of a mini pc

Hi Troy,

Speedtest is one way of testing performance, there are many other ways - Customer configuration, network drivers, OS version/patch level, wifi drivers, wifi kit etc. can all be factors - so we have kit that we know and have thoroughly tested. We've also seen some strange results based on latency in the past with Speedtest.

In order to ensure we can validate what's being seen, test things from multiple angles as well as where needed grab packet captures (To work with hardware vendors and upstream providers), a mini PC is really useful. We send these types of devices out infrequently (I can count on one hand for the last 12 months), this also provides us the ability to connect via out of band (4g) to test elements as well.

Hopefully that makes sense.

Nick.

was more simply a question around the posted tests and the actual client, i absolutely agree there are tons of ways to test!

That kit is pretty impressive, thanks for sharing!

I'll be honest, i was expecting an odriod or the likes.

Ok, So I thought I should post just to conclude the matter.

One of the issues seems to be the default speedtest server I get isn't capable of >200Mb/s.  I had tried a few others, including 2degrees, which were better but not managed to get the speeds that Nick's magic box can achieve, even some speedtest servers that seem to suggest they have a 10Gb connection can't match the speed of 2d's server.  I can now get 900 down, even with the netgear, upload is less reliable but even there I have seen 550, which isn't too bad for a 400 connection.  Using WIFi I can reliably get 4-500 down but again upload is often a bit more flaky with 40-50 common and 2-300 on occasion.  I suspect the gigabit card in my mac, coupled with older software is why I didn't get the speeds of the wired connection, although I've not tested this again (with the 2d server) recently as the 2d box was plugged into the wired connection.  Not sure there's much I can do about the wifi upload speeds.

Anyway, much to my embarrassment, it was a combination of my hardware and speedtest's default server that was causing the slow speed, all good from 2degrees/UFF's end.  Nick & Ricky at 2 degrees have been great at helping me troubleshoot as the slightly unusual setup of ending up on LAN2 had thought to potentially be an issue but in fact isn't.  The new cat6 cables that the original CSR was sending out appear to have been lost in the mail, but then that wasn't the problem in the end either.

Now I just need to persuade my wife I need a new computer so we can use the fibre connection to it's maximum potential.....

Thanks again for the help Nick.

What were you expecting? 1000/500?

2D just won't have been able to set up on LAN1 as usual due to the old connection - the CSR may not have realised the limitations of not using LAN1 as it's not a common scenario...

Something close to that, yes. I now realise that this is exactly what has happened I didn’t know it mattered which LAN port you were on and neither, it would seem, do Chorus/2degrees.

Thanks for the tip

A

2d would have been unable to provision you a Gigabit connection, the Chorus system won't allow it. I suspect it's a simple case of miscommunication where you've ordered a product that isn't possible so they've given you what is possible.

Would just like to note that I have near-gigabit speeds on LAN2:

Hey guys, not wanting to rehash this whole debate but boy, I'm having the same issue that OP was having and the same issue others on Geekzone have had.

I've got a Northpower ONT which only has 1 LAN light, but am connected to Lan 1 on the ONT with gigabit cable to a Synology RT2600 router.

I've got lots of speed tests on both wifi and cable via a Windows 10 PC. I've seen the driver comments for the network card and will try this, but the strange part about my issue is that I also have a SamKnows box hooked up as part of the Commerce Commission trial. The SamKnows box is getting piss poor speeds across the board and yet is gigabit wired straight to the Synology router - so this should be doing well (and eliminates the cause being the Windows 10 drivers). Wifi speeds similarly are not great, generally seeing the same issues as via a wired speed test.

On a wired speed test I'll get 150 - 250mbit down (pretty variable); and 500odd mbit up (consistently). On a wireless test I get between 80 and 150 down, and about 220 odd up (via 5ghz network). I've tried this with numerous devices and the results are fairly consistent. I've confirmed in all instances that my wifi connections too are very strong (via connectivity on the Synology router).

Because it's annoying the hell out of me, and because I am waiting on Northpower and 2degrees to diagnose, I've gone and purchased an Asus AC88U to ensure it's not the Synology router. I figure I'll sell the one that works the least well in my situation. Mainly because 2degrees keep trying to get me to reconnect the Fritzbox (which is long gone as the wifi was terrible and I've been a customer for years, not like I just got one and flogged it). Now at least I can ensure it's not router specific.

Anyone got any ideas about what else I can try? The real weird one in my case is the SamKnows box which eliminates driver issues as a possible cause.

@naturalhighNZ The Asus AC88U is both overpriced and underperforming. If you're wanting good "off the shelf" simple solution then get a proper wireless solution like an Ubiquiti AmpliFi which can indeed do gigabit speeds (with hardware NAT enabled) as it comes in at nearly the same price as the Asus.

But really, don't get ripped off. The Fritz!Box is actually a great router and there is a reason why 2degrees recommends this. If you want a router to "test with" then the absolute cheapest router that can do Gigabit speeds is the Huawei HG659 which can be picked up for next to nothing on Trademe.

Also consider maybe getting both a Grandstream GWN7000 + a Grandstream GWN7610 instead of the Asus if features are your thing. It'll give you the absolute best performing wireless and the router has a tonne of features too (and can route Gigabit). This comes in to around the same price as you spent on the Asus and yet performs better.

Rule of thumb - if a router has buzzwords such as "Gaming", "Ultimate Performance" and other gaming related things and is expensive then it is going to be overpriced crap. Don't get sucked in.

There is a link in my signature of a router guide. Note, most of this links to enterprise grade solutions as they're very hard to beat by consumer grade routers on price.

Thanks for that, I guess I should've asked here.

I picked it up for a good price, $330 bucks. So figure either way I'm not too badly off.

Really I should invest in on hardwiring my house with ethernet...
