I was pretty clear in my edit message and there was no intention to hide anything but keep the discussion on point.

From my perspective, the "gaming" you are mentioning is not their fault but rather the fault of the Ookla and the way they do speed tests. I do agree that to an educated user that doesn't mean much.

My criticism is that you were calling giving people more bandwidth (and I'm not talking about the quality of service here) a bad thing. Which it is definitely not.

It's the same if <A cellular provider> bumped your mobile plan to the next tier. You can mention that their service is bad in rural areas, you could say that they round up minutes to the nearest 10 unlike the competition, but you can't call giving a better plan a bad thing. It is in every way better for the consumer who got it compared to what they previously had.

---

The bottom line with this is that when people are shopping around, like myself, run into posts/claims like this one it makes me distrust you equally. Not only am I becoming aware that a provider may not be good, but I also become aware that people cannot be trusted when looks like they are looking for any excuse to criticize a provider they don't like.

Your followup post was much much more useful to me than the one I originally replied to as it's stating other important factors that need to be considered.

An ISP has to pay Ookla to "win" this award so it is both their fault and also pure marketing - as is advertising that they are also the fastest. This advertising is misleading to consumers and this is not the first time they've been caught out with misleading advertising.

When Truenet was operating it was proven time and time again that almost any other ISP was indeed faster than MyRepublic just due to how their network is designed.

So yes - I am calling them out on dodgy advertising as many other people in tech communities are also. You're seriously better off with almost any other provider (and also, not being bias here, many others will agree).

My Republic - back when their support was okay (and local)...and they could afford to have William Shatner in their advertising.

Same reason as last time. The Ookla reporting is fundamentally flawed. It's almost funny at this point that MR chooses to pay for the right to use these results in marketing.

In related news, water is wet, fire is hot and ludicrously biased sample populations will give misleading results.

Cheers - N

Total rubbish results and they have not even peered in Wellington/Christchurch so all your traffic within NZ gets shunted to Auckland

Source - https://www.peeringdb.com/ix/3568

Even Vodafone, for all its other flaws all ISPs now peers in Wellington

Give me Voyager/Vocus/Xtreme, Heck even TrustPower connection any day.

End of the day, its all marketing, and they've used their budget well.

Even if it is all crap.

quickymart:

And yet again, they're (somehow) the fastest:

Clearly content marketing, nothing to see here.

That link doesn't even appear in the first 20 results for the query below, so how did you find such an obscure website?
