Hmm... who are you with now just out of interest?

I'm with Telecom broadband these days. Its not the cheapest, however in my experience one of the fastest and most reliable connections around.

Noodles: Duncan, does Orcon have an Akamai mirror and is this part of the "O Zone"?

I'm curious also

I have thought of going from Orcon to Telecom just to get a good fone service but the thought of having to deal with Xtra puts me off..

I have been an Orcon customer for over 2 years, and they have always pushed the better value etc, they have been pretty good, but I don't agree with the massive price increase, 100% on the overage really bugs me, Sure my 50gb data pack has gone up $10.00, I can live with that....

I'm disappointed with Orcon's new Ozone... it’s pathetic to be honest, at least TVNZ is useful, but common guys put more effort into it.

Surely Orcon has some way of telling which traffic is local,

why don't they just make all Local traffic free! Local traffic doesn't cost anything anyway?

If Orcon really wants something to put them infront of the rest (Telecom, Vodafone etc) Partner with TiVo, TIVO should be pretty good when it gets here, they did well in Australia,

If Orcon offered free data for TiVo users, then you can expect to get more customers that way...

A bit of a rant, and a suggestion in 1 post...

It's a shame they didn't seriously consider promoting off-peak - heavy users like myself can easily schedule downloads for the middle of the night, taking demand off peak times. Currently there is no incentive to do so. I'm considering a move to Slingshot.

Local does cost money in terms of  backhaul, peering, cost of hardware to handle higher sustained throughput and number of connections.

Not as expensive as international transit but definately not free/nothing.

I wouldn't mind a data pack between 10GB and 25GB. 25GB extra is way too much for me, but with the new overage charge I almost may as well get it because that's the equivalent of only 16.5GB @ 10GB + $2/GB. If I did that then I'd just use the bandwidth I don't even need, downloading things I don't even want just so I can use my data pack.

Now I'm paying $92 per month and only getting 15GB, compared to $90 for 20GB on Vodafone Red. 20GB is around perfect for me too, so that either costs me $102 or I could pay $105 and get 30GB, or I could switch to Vodafone and save $12-$15 per month! Of course, then I'd get locked into a contract with is a disincentive I'm sure Orcon are relying on.

Interestingly enough, when I had the choice I went with Orcon+ because of the cheap overage and no contract. That was 12 months ago though, so it wouldn't have made a difference anyway, if I'd gone with Vodafone back then I'd be out of contract by now anyway!

That would really help if it was.

I agree, it would help if it was, being that it's inside the Orcon network, shouldn't cost much to transfer traffic to and from Akamai.

Hi guys,

Thanks for all the feedback, we are taking it all into consideration for future.

In the mean time the information on all the price changes and the O Zone is up on our website too: http://www.orcon.net.nz/about/article/changes_to_orcon_and_orcon_broadband_data_prices

Also, on Akamai...

The problem with zero rating the Akamai server is that there is no definitive list of what content is on the Akamai box. We want the O Zone to be as transparent and easy to understand as possible e.g. you know that if you go to the George FM website, or stream the George FM stream then it wont count toward your data cap. If we include the Akamai server all of a sudden some 'random' stuff will not count, and other stuff will, and there is no easy way for our customers to tell before they start downloading something if it will count or not.

I understand the confusion it could cause customers as it's not easy to figure out if something is on Akamai or not, but couldn't you just zero rate Akamai anyway and not announce it? Or say "Microsoft Updates" instead of Akamai as most people would be pulling down updates every month. I think iTunes is also done through Akamai, so this will be more understandable to the end user.

I think I might apply for jobs with all of these "o zone" websites,
then I could telecommute without getting charged for data.
