No, I think he means the Median (the number which half of all users send less than and half of all users send more than) which is not subject to the 'skewing' you mention.

Yes, I know what median means, but he said "median average" which doesn't really make sense, and I've never seen median TXT usage stats, only mean.

Just using the same terminology we used at high school :P

Specifically:
There are three (main) types of average.
Mean, median and mode.

I am referring to the median average, not the mean average nor the modal average.

(vblame my teacher if that is incorrect, but if you check here: http://www.andrews.edu/~calkins/math/webtexts/stat03.htm for 'average' you will see median and mode in that article)

I remember seeing a figure for median number of SMS sent but cannot for the life of me remember where it was.  I'm pretty sure it was more than 2/day though.

A very quick google only came up with this:
http://www.cellsigns.com/industry.shtml
Mean Average SMS sent per month for US cellphone users was 357 in June 2008

(yes, I know, that is only the mean, but it is still bloody high)

Median average is a perfectly accpetable term. The mean, the median and the mode are all just fine as measures of central tendecy or averages as you may know them.

All the averages have their drawbacks and advantages. Using all of them might be the best way to make a fully informed comparison, but I don't know if it's all that worth it.

Obviously, at 9c a text (really great pricing - less than half) is great for casual texters like me who usually send less than two a day. If you're a heavy texter who currently uses $10 text or similar, then it's obviously not for you. But you're a low value customer (low margin, high volume) anyway.
