Am I the only one who thinks VF Ireland's response is contradictory? On one hand they say they accept 2degrees texts and on the other hand they say they won't accept 2degrees texts without an agreement...

Clear as mud.

Seems to be a one-way thing. They accepts txts from 2D but won't send them to 2D. What an outfit.

I think the matter is pretty simple, no matter how much 2Degrees try to pawn the blame off by saying things like "we do have some international carriers who've still not enabled the functionality for their customers to send text back to our customers."

Statements like the above are a blame shifting exercise designed to try and foster discontent against other carriers and garner symapthy for the "poor new entrant who's being treated unfairly."

This is not the fault of the international carriers no matter what colour you try and paint it. It's the lack of interconnect agreements. Whether one side is dragging the chain or not we don't know. We also don't know why.

Maybe 2 Degrees are dragging it because they want a better deal? Maybe UK/Eire are dragging it because they think 2 Degrees are being unreasonable? Maybe no-one's dragging it and it simply comes down to poor management?

We'll probably never know - neither side is renowned for being totally up-front...

All good points; can't really argue with that.

hmm, so an sms leaves 2degrees gets to vodafoneUK who even tho they have no agreement to charge 2degrees send the sms onto the right person, but when an sms leaves vodafoneUK and gets to 2degrees they don't pass it on to the customer because they can't charge vodafoneuk for it?

I say good on VodafoneUK for taking the high road and looking after their customers and boo to 2degrees for wanting more money and not just returning the favour that vodafoneUK are doing for them.

at least thats how I presume its working.

You can also stop presuming if you like and read my really long thread in the stickies explaining exactly how it all works.

In my opinion, a customer shouldn't need to know how it works, just that it works

True. Having said that, knowing how your car works helps to ensure you don't run out of petrol in the middle of nowhere.

And besides, we're all geeks here. If you weren't interested in gory technical details, why would you be reading this forum? :-)
