The article didn't specifically say that the X5 was under $500 - that was in reference to the LG Optimus One (P500).

However, the Optimus One doesn't look too bad either (just slightly slower with a 600MHz processor, lower res cam, display etc...)

The article does actually say that both are under $500:

Mobile operator 2degrees is predicting the start of the "smartphone wars" as it launches two new handsets that cost less than $500

Wonder if the X6 is coming too, that does look good

Hmm... good point. Might save up till then. IDEOS X5 is set to be released in January 2011 though...

Admittedly I've only had the thing for a few hours, but I've all but listed it on trademe...

Its extremely feature rich - but the difficulty at which is takes for me to type an SMS is pretty much a deal breaker.

The screen is too small to make the keyboard buttons large enough.

I'll give it another 48 hours - but most likely will sell it on.

There are different Android keyboards, might be worth trying some from the Market. Look at SlideIt, Swype as well as the traditional keyboard type options. Does the IDEOS have TouchPal keyboard as as option?

Samsung Note20 Ultra, on 2degrees

Actually, I accidently flicked it onto an alternative input mode... (the one that vibrates on the key when you touch it. I find this to be almost usable... I don't think you would want an Android phone to have a screen any smaller though.

I can imagine that on a slightly larger screen that the keyboard would -much- more effective.

Conclusion: I probably will still look to flick it off, but only to replace with an android phone that has a proper tactile keyboard.

Will 2degrees be bringing something like this out soon?

You've probably tried this but have you flipped to landscape mode when inputting text? That makes the screen width and hence button size about the same as  a 3.2" screen in portrait mode, which is pretty good in my experience.

The X5 looks good, anyone seen what the CPU specs are for it?

The report I saw says Qualcomm MSM7230, 800 MHz processor although a few others seem to think the X5 and X6 share the same Qualcomm 1 GHz MSM8255 Snapdragon processor.

Yeh Im getting used to it...

Iv noticed that if I accidently clip the volume down button is snaps into landscape mode faster... is this a coincidence or a 'feature'?

Swiftkey is my preferred keyboard
It predicts what your next word is without ANY typing (based upon your sms history and "language rules")
try the demo

I see this is at dick smith at the moment for $100 off so $279 - pretty good price (finishes tomorrow 23rd).

Wouldn't mind having a play with this phone - stock 2.2, Proximity and Ambient Light sensors and fast-ish processor make this phone a bit of a stand out in the budget android range at the moment.

Now owning the Vodafone 845 and Telecom Galaxy 5 (search for the video reviews) the Ideos looks like a good device and potentially the best of the bunch - if I get my hands on one i'll post a review.
