I think this whole test race thing is totally despicable and like, "Big Time", will result in the actions of a few spoiling it for all. If this is how 2 degrees chooses to promote their business, then I can only hope that another carrier does exactly the same to them. They would have no one to blame but themselves.

It just highlights the ridiculous MTR that is charged for access into another telcos network. Quite funny actually as telecom has started warning and blocking even txt5000/2500 sims.

I second what kingzzz69 said.

I don't think the intention is to promote 2degrees, it is simply to highlight to T.C. and V.F. how silly MTR rates are and to encourage negotiation to reduce or eliminating the rates.

I suspect V.F. and 2D may have already negotiated some kind of deal which is why V.F. doesn't seem to be as unhappy about the "promotion" as T.C.

As I said earlier, this tactic worked for Clear in the 90's to eliminate fixed line MTR rates.

actually what it shows is how much better it is for telcos to charge low prices to call/txt their own network, and high pricesto call/txt other networks.

The reason Telecom are so exposed is because their text plans are for any network.(unlike Vodafone's Text2000 which only applies to on-net texts). IOW Vodafone are shielded from this because they charge more (a lot more) for off-net texts than on-net.

It;'s ironic really because 2D have been arguing that the large telcos charging high prices for off-net vs on-net is bad for competition.

If they were true to their word, they should be applauding telecom for having the sameprice for anynet txts (and any net minutes) yet they don't. They design a promotion specifically to punish that.

If you've followed the history of 2degrees you'd be aware theitr interconnection deal with Vodafone is asymmetric and that their rates are lower than existing MTR's. There are plenty of articles on this including my blog post on the Text Me race from a month or so ago.

This tactic of Clear exploiting MTR's was not a factor in the decision to employ BAK for call termination in NZ and had absolutely nothing to do with this. BAK for local calls came solely as a result of free local calling being legislated by the Kiwi Share / TSO, which in turn is partially funded by the TSO levy. Once competition appeared in the local PSTN market it was readily apparent you couldn't bill for local calls when they had to be free!

I note the Commerce Commission are making a final decision on mobile termination rates at the end of March this year.

Termination rates should have been regulated years ago.

VF dont have any off network text addons to allow for people to use them to do this.

Its hearing things like that, which make me glad for the fair use clause for a change. Normally I hate the things when things are sold as unlimited, but 250sms in an hour is clearly abuse of it.

Its not free, telecom are paying for it, so indirectly we are all paying for the 2 degrees freeloaders prizes unless the people sending the texts are actually paying 20c a text, which they wont be.

Nothing is free in this world. Telecom are paying for that phone, which in turn you're paying for using other Telecom products in services to recover the money they're losing with people abusing the TXT plan.
