Is the 2degrees text me race offering guaranteed prizes, ie it states if you receive 2000 text messages you win a Nokia 1800.

Does the "you win" part mean you go in a draw to win a Nokia 1800 or are you guaranteed one if you received 2000 texts from a network other than 2degrees?

The terms and conditions state "runner up prizes may be awarded to every 2degrees customer who signs up to the text me race and receives the specified number of texts from either Vodafone or Telecom customers"?

All seems a bit ambiguous?

Can anyone clarify?

If you get 2000 messages from other networks you WILL get that prize.

The grand prizes - TVs, XBoxs etc. - are limited, but the other ones (phones, topups) are guaranteed, provided as boby55 says they come from another network.

I believe the Textmerace is about keeping the SMS balance whilst they offer stupid 2000 sms for $10.

On the iPhone you can send HUGE sms. What I did was create a note with 30,000 characters and then pasted it into the sms area.

No, it emphasizes just how scummy 2degrees can go to reinforce their misguided belief that BAK is actually a better system. Oh wait it is. For them.

Anyway, the solution is to take the SIM out of your iPhone and stick it in a data card, then use the data card's software to send messages.

Personally, I refuse to participate in this dirty tactic also. Shame on you, 2degrees.

Will be interesting to see if the other Telco's offer a similar 'race' to re-coup some of there lost revenue.

Say Vodafone offer a 'text race' for texts received from 2degrees, that would leave 2degrees out of pocket after forking out to purchase all of the prizes for their customers!

Nothing stopping other Telcos from running these promotions, I still think it proves that the current system is flawed. Each to our own!

Not really - 2degrees can fund the giveaway through the disproportionate MTR revenue.

Let's say it's at 5c per SMS (a lower figure than the actual number I believe, so only purely as an example).
Receiving 40,000 texts (for the LG Optimus One) would equal $2000 revenue.
Receiving 1,000 texts (for the $30 top up) would equal $50 revenue.

Even at 5c/SMS, they STILL earn more than enough to cover for the prizes.

It's win-win for 2degrees.

You need a SIM with the unlimited text add-on which was available a few months ago on XT, which I have :-P . It would still take you ages, you would need to save a draft of a multipart message then just keep re-sending it. 10 txts at a time or what ever your phone allows (alas, mine switches automagically to MMS if it's longer than 10).

How can it be a win-win for 2degrees. Surely as im suggesting, if Vodafone offer exactly the same promotion for messages received from 2degrees, then not only are 2 degrees going to have to pay Vodafone the MTR revenue, but also have to keep their promise of purchasing all of prizes on offer?

Surely this would balance out be a no-win situation for 2degrees and Vodafone if that was Vodafones plan, but better they re-coup the enormous amount of MTR revenue they are currently paying?

MTRs don't really have much of an effect when messages were sent back and forth symmetrically, so if Vodafone introduce a similar thing then it should balance out.

There's a few things to consider...

2degrees pay a lower MTR rate per SMS to Vodafone than Vodafone does to 2degrees (I'm not a expert on stuff like MTRs or anything, so I have no idea on Telecom, but I'm guessing they're equal in that case)

But Vodafone have a larger customer base

I can't crunch the numbers so can't answer the effect on the differences in revenue through MTRs for the telcos over the long term.

I would think this is what happens if any of the telcos introduce such a promotion:

2degrees introduces promotion, texts mainly flow from Telecom, as Vodafone don't have a any-network texting pack for Prepay customers (which is a large proportion of their customer base)

Vodafone introduces promotion, texts mainly flow from Telecom (see above) compared to 2degrees simply because of their smaller number of customers and slightly smaller texting pack. Even though they have a lower running cost per SMS, I personally wouldn't believe people would really spend say $90 for 1000 texts.

Telecom introduces promotion, texts mainly come from 2degrees, but again, smaller customer base means slower revenue gathering also restricted by smaller fixed texting pack.

That's just my view though.

The only reason the promotion works is because of telecom who have still the Unlimited SMS promotion which ends soon.

It would be silly for vodafone to ask the same promotion. I guarantee you that the winner of this text promotion has a sms bomber setup from an XT phone.

I have three unlimited sims, want one?

Even if you don't have XT with non stop text still active or whatever it was called you can still gets a $299 phone for around $89ish because of the Telecom TXT Anyone 2500 addon, which is currently doubled ("double joy") for December.

So 10000 txt's for an IDEOS

$5 for 2degrees SIM
+ $30 for Telecom SIM #1
+ $12 for TXT Anyone 2500 #1 (5000 txts due to "double joy" promo)
+ $30 for Telecom SIM #2
+ $12 for TXT Anyone 2500 #2 (5000 txts due to "double joy" promo)

Then automate sending the txt's via PC Suite software for your phone or an app with a huge text area that breaks down the txt into loads of xyz character sms messages.

Enjoy your $299 phone for $89

.. and then rinse and repeat

Anyway while this promo seems pretty low brow, it's probably a mistake to not take advantage of a mobile industry cat fight.
