Isn't it odd that the introduced interference is not compensated in some way... analogies fails all the time, but this situation is rather similar to opening a factory spewing polluted water downstream, notification before hand doesn't justify the action?

but anyway, investment is being made, and I suppose that's good enough for regulators.

After discovering I am on the New DNS. As the modem automatically detect the new DNS. and I decided to follow pohutukawa's post about the DNS post with 60.x.x.x

hmmm at the present time, 11:20pm running on the youtube. I haven't have any problem at all. No buffering at all.

I don't know whether DNS affect youtube at all. but I tell ya, it is much better than before

Of course not, Orcon are _forced_ to buy a link to you via telecoms wholesale gear. They can't afford to compensate you, nor should they.

So what would enable Orcon and others to provide a guaranteed service, for it seems that Telecom are hiding behind a "best-effort-wholesale" veil?

How about requiring that wholesale services have a guaranteed service element? That should be the price a market-moving player pays for their dominant position.

The only way Orcon could offer a guaranteed service like that, they'd have to have DSLAMs in all the cabinets/exchanges that telecom put in, that's not really economically feasible.

There IS a guaranteed service element, sort of. On telecom wholesale, you can get ~0-128kbit on the telecom->ISP handover link :P

Yep, so regulate the guaranteed service on the handover link.

Telecom would figure it out if they had to.

jackyleunght2002: After discovering I am on the New DNS. As the modem automatically detect the new DNS. and I decided to follow pohutukawa's post about the DNS post with 60.x.x.x

So the 60.234.x.x was clearly better than the 121.98.0.x dns servers?

I'm not sure dns is the main problem... I did some tests last night and the dns response seemed o.k. I'm using wget to eliminate any browser issues and also because wget records the start and end times - not just the download speed. You can see in this example there were several timeouts and retries before the index file was downloaded.

Note: you can get wget.exe for windows here: http://users.ugent.be/~bpuype/wget/
Most Linux distributions will already have it.

I suspect you're right. I'm not seeing any difference with the "new" DNS servers.

It's latency and/or bandwidth, or congestion somewhere upstream of Orcon.

We've been having the same problems since the 16th with international traffic and peak times.
On Orcon@Home Bronze (Max/Max).
Also does the second "Max" mean that we have max up?
We are currently sitting on 15Mb down 600Kb up.

Its fine on my orcon connection. If you have problems with international only, search for "NZ VPN".

I am using a wellington based VPN connection and it gets me through the peak period when orcon is crap.

A quick Google search throws up the following - would you recommend this provider?

If I was you I would not be advertising the fact that you access sites that promote illegal downloads/copyright infringement on public forums like GeekZone.

According to orcon network status the connection with no data has been fixed and I am happy to confirm that all pages national and international load happily at peak time today and yesterday for me at very high speeds.
