jaymz:
I was on a waiting list of about 12, the wait time was going to be 6 months, but i managed to get connected within about 4 weeks (by means i cannot express in a public forum).

Unless your ISP bumped you up the list of their customers who were waiting for a port on that same exchange, what someone has done for you sounds extremely unethical, and no one likes queue jumpers.

sbiddle: Where exactly are you located and what exchange are you being provided service from (the Chorus website will tell you this)? The availability of ports in any cities is virtually a non event now that the cabinetisation project is essentally complete.

I'll be in Henderson (off sturges road)

I've spoken to them again and they think they can get the port that the current?tenants?of my house will?relinquish?once they move out. So here is hoping. Being the eternal pessimist, I'm sure that wont be the case.

i have an interesting experience two years ago.....

When was this? Part of the structural seperation of Chorus means Telecom can not get any favourable treatment any more in terms of wholesale services...??

As the post says, 2 years ago. So it's plausible (though still a bit dubious?)

i was not sure what happening then. all i did was simply signing up to telecom and later that month port back to maxnet.

Honestly Orcon are frustrating to deal with. They refuse to tell me where on the waitiing list I am, which makes it very difficult to plan a work-around in the meantime. On top of that, they didn't disconnect my phone at my previous address on the date I asked, and in fact still haven't done it. Although they have at least escalated it.

Seriously thinking about switching to Telecom.

ISP's are given were you are on a the port waiter.

The next question is: if you get connected faster with Telecom then you did with orcon you should tell orcon this. This could be a matter of commercial interest to them, granting Xtra customers over other ISP's.

You mean Chorus?

Connections are managed by Chorus. Chorus is not Telecom. They have been separated for months, and Telecom had to get to the same queue as every other ISP.

Now enough of this "I hate Telecom so I will blame everything on them" mentality, for the sake of having the country actually moving forward...

They could start "moving forward" by actually adding infrastructure so people don't have to wait months just to get an internet connection.

Huh? I'm not quite sure what country you've living in.

$1 billion has been spent in the last 3 years on cabinetisation to deliver 10Mbps + connections to 84% of the population and the RBI rollout which is being funded by the Government will increase this to 92% over the next 6 years.

In virtually every urban area of NZ there are no such thing as part waiters - these issues have all been resolved by the cabinetisation project.

In the case of the OP it's part of the RBI rollout and will see equipment installed. Upgrading a network isn't like going to a McDonalds and ordering a Big Mac and seeing it magically appear before your eyes in under 60 seconds - it takes time and the timeframes and coverage maps for RBI DSL have been public for a number of months.

Well, apart from the half a dozen people posting in this very discussion. Clearly there are lots of port waiters, and many of us live in urban areas.

My address is in a cabinet area and I'm a port waiter.

HSN/EF

I don't understand how they can upgrade something and then not even have capacity 18 months later.

Who has told you you're unable to get service? I've just had a quick look now and can't see anything listed indicating any issues off that cabinet.

Ring up any random ISP and ask them to do a prequalification for you.
