sbiddle:The biggest issue is getting Google to changes things, and the roadblock that already exists with Mastercard and Visa both loving Gemalto's NFC solution (which is what Auckland transport are using).

Yes agree with you on Google but at the moment they are allowing parallel UICC implementation with Google Wallet. Apple will also be interesting. But to control it in typical Apple fashion they will need a lot of ecosystem pieces under their control which will be a challenge even for them.

As for Gemalto, they should come into line with the SIMalliance specification (& will be driven there by mobile operators) although any trial may use a 'pre-standards' solution.

I found it (not the first results, it's down the list) and it even has an update offered to the official LG Optimus Net already.

If you search the Play Store from your phone, the app will only show up if your phone is NFC capable. Here's the link to the app on the Play website: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nz.co.snapper.mobile

If you don't have a NFC mobile you can't read any card. And you can only see your own mobile balance if you have a combination of SIM and device that work together. Check the link in the OP.

This whole thing seems kinda silly at the moment, for me being in christchurch, I have a small sticker that metroinfo sell for $15 that you stick on the back of your phone and i can use my phone to get on the bus like that.

although it would be cool if i didn't need the sticker, i got it back before the 2010 earthquake so I've had this ages before all of you in wellington and auckland :P

apart from this though, the metroinfo reps seem to be pretty uninterested in passing on feedback about 'new' tech. for example they don't even have the bus stops on google maps yet, but they are rate payer funded so i suppose there is only so much they can do.

That kinda misses the point of having it on the phone; which would be getting the real balance from the wallet (not the time delayed balance from the online systems) and being able to top up the wallet anywhere anytime.

Actually my two biggest issues with the service are

1. My phone doesn't work with it :-(  (Galaxy Nexus) and I am not about to buy a new phone
2. Most of the Snapper cards out there appear to be older generation and I can't even read the balance or top them up. I know the app does work for that feature since a few folks at work have more recent cards but I am not about to purchase  more cards at $10 each just for ability to top them up.

Staying in Wellington. Check out my AirBnB in the Wellington CBD.  https://www.airbnb.co.nz/h/wellycbd  PM me and mention GZ to get a 15% discount and no AirBnB charges.

I agree that it would be nice if more phones could support it out of the box, but as the GZ technical session showed, there's a lot more to NFC than just the chip.

When I get around to it, I'll be swapping my older generation Snapper card for one of the new ones. $10 seems like a small price to pay for the ability to top up from my phone (HTC One X). I can't remember how much I paid for my original USB Snapper topper-upper-thingy, but I'm sure it was a lot more than $10.

I have an app on my ipod that tells me my balance and there's an online tool you can top up with via credit card. also when you use your card on the bus it tells you your balance on the screen.
It'll be good when they make it available for other services and phones though

I have three cards to change and one of them is my son't school ID card which I suspect would still not work even if it were replaced since it appears the school has a stock pile of old cards they use.

One thing about topping cards manually at the New World is I get Fly Buys and also points on my credit card - so duoble dipping. This is something I would lose if I topped up the card using the app.

Yes. Press release just received:

Samsung Galaxy S III - the latest addition to the Touch2Pay with Snapper Mobile family.

Thursday 31st May 2012
Wellington, New Zealand

New Zealand-based contactless payments and ticketing company Snapper announces today that it has extended support for Snapper Mobile to Samsung’s flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S III.

Pay for everyday items with your mobile.

“We are very pleased with the response to the launch of Touch2Pay with Snapper Mobile in partnership with 2degrees. Customers love the convenience of being able to pay for everyday things with their mobile, and we look forward to seeing even more Touch2Pay with Snapper Mobile handsets coming to market this year” says Snapper CEO Miki Szikszai.

The launch of the Samsung Galaxy S III has been eagerly anticipated: customers will get the best possible experience with this phone from 2degrees and Snapper.

Buy a Samsung Galaxy S III Touch2Pay smartphone from a 2degrees store in Wellington, download the free Snapper Mobile app from Google Play and you’ll be able to start paying for everyday items with your mobile.

Free weekends.

As an added bonus, customers that purchase a Touch2Pay smartphone from a Wellington 2degrees store before 31st July will also receive free weekend travel on GO Wellington and Valley Flyer bus services and 1GB of free mobile broadband zone data to use every weekend until the end of 2012.

“We are really looking forward to making Touch2Pay with Snapper Mobile available to more NFC-standards compliant smartphones as they become available,” Szikszai said.

Has anyone tried this with a HTC One X? I'm with another provider but this would almost be worth transferring.
