If the VDSL is on another pair then the filter on the line with retro-phone services will not do anything as there is no VDSL on that line.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Then you need one, just like if your internal wiring is a mess with stubs everywhere and unused sockets and old 3 wire junk and dodgey stuff installed by a sky "technician" etc.

Sky "technician"(s) shouldn't be allowed to ever touch anything to do with POTS / DSL services.
Lord help us when UFB goes mainstream.

Electricians also should be banned, They think that stripping back the shielding about 150mm and untwisting the pairs is A-OK

Hi All,

My first post here (but have been lurking around these forums for a few years).
I've also talked with Snap and ordered VDSL2 with a POTs line They are keeping the offer the same at an extra $25 a month / Half price modem). They said I will need to have a splitter installed. I'm in a fairly new house (approx 3 years) and I know there is at least an ADSL Splitter already installed as I plug my router directly into a dedicated socket in cupboard under the stairs. There are also 7 network cables coming out of the wall. Other than that I have no way of telling what type of splitter I have. Reading the above I assume that the VDSL splitter will be differrent I need to have this installed. I'm just curious where this is going to go as I may have to rip apart the wall to see whre the wiring comes in... eek!

As far as I am aware if you have a ADSL Master splitter installed, it should work the same for VDSL.

It should be accessible incase it ever needed to be replaced.
I don't think ADSL splitters will work with a VDSL connection, It needs to be one of the combo ones.
If you can find it there should be a telepermit label on it which will say what it's suitable for.

Older splitters aren't VDSL rated and only support the wider frequency band for ADSL/ADSL2+. Any device installed within the past couple of years should be a VDSL2 rated unit. It's easy to tell as it will have VDSL2 written on it.

SamF:
sbiddle:Aren't Snap only doing Naked VDSL2? If so this is perfectly normal as they'll need to provision a new connection on a 2nd pair into your home complete with new jackpoint. Simply installing a master filter isn't going to do anything.

But wait... but didn't you say:

sbiddle: At the end of the day VDSL2 reguires a master filter. End of story. It doesn't matter whether you have a naked or clothed connection.

Am I missing something?  I'm confused! :/  Isn't the point of a splitter to avoid having to install a new physical line?

It depends of you're after a clothed or naked connection. Snap are selling this service as a Naked offering. With a Naked VDSL2 install you will still require a master filter if you want to avoid the issues of reflections caused by multiple jackpoints UNLESS you change your wiring so you only have a single jackpoint wired directly to the demarc.

If you opt for clothed VDSL2 you'll need a master filter installed to both overcome the reflections and to split the voice and DSL.

Clear if you opt for a Naked VDSL2 install from Snap and have an existing POTS line then Chorus are going to have to perform a connection+wiring install to connect your VDSL2 on the 2nd pair coming into your home, and connect this to a dedicated jackpoint.

I am still trying to work out which POTS providers allow you to have POTS on their line, but Internet (Like VDSL or ADSL) with another provider?

Not an answer to your queston: but Snap are allowing me to have thier standard 'clothed' service with VDSL2.  After looking for several months to move ISP from Orcon, Snap provided the best overall solution for me. Being able to add VDSL for the extra $25 was the icing on the cake and I finally wave goodbye to Orcon July 12th... Can't wait!

Is there a reason why you need two diffent providers?

There is nothing stopping any provider from doing this. Most want to budle services because is no money to be made selling cheap internet or just reselling a phone service.

I think only telecom do, but when a friend was looking no other ISPs would take you on as a new customer without moving the phoneline to them as well.

Well I tried to do this at home, and the only provider who would do it was Telecom and even then I had my doubts as the girl didn't seem to understand what I wanted but said they could do it anyway.

End the end it was a nightmare so I installed VDSL on a separate line.
