kohum, I think you should contact Dick Smith because they are the one who will fix under warranty and support your phone as you've purchased it from them. Samsung NZ will be your second option. I don't think you should contact Vodafone to support a phone you haven't got from them.

This whole CSC nonsense has to change. ?If we change carriers, there should be an official way without voiding warranty for us (if we choose to) to be able to put the respective carrier CSC on the phone so that it can be fully supported by the carrier.

Here is what I would do, wait until 2degrees releases jelly bean (may we all live long enough to see it happen) and you'll get the update automatically, otherwise and if Vodafone beat 2degrees to it, then go to Dick Smith and ask them to update the phone for you, for the reasonable reasons of course which are that you need the update and you are a Vodafone customer :) They should be able to help you as they have many geeks working for them. Otherwise, and if all attempts fail, use the method which I don't think voids the warranty as you are still using their (samsung) firmware, also your phone stats should say "Official Firmware" etc...

Yeah... will have to do that since Vodafone just confirmed that they won't help me change the CSC to be supportable by Vodafone. ?Btw, I did try the method that you posted in the other thread of using Check Fus to download the stock rom and it didn't work. ?I will post there instead of hijacking this one.

John, I understand. But the issue is that these are "respectable" retailers, not your small parallel import shops that are selling phones by saying that it is "supported" on the vodafone network. Yes, you can say that it works on the network, therefore it's supported but it's very confusing for customers. If they had told me that it wasn't supported, I would have walked another 10 meters to a vodafone store and bought the phone. The issue is that it is NOT clear when making the purchase especially for people who are new to the Android world. I'm sure you are going to get a lot more calls from people wondering why they aren't getting updates etc when the vodafone forums say that the update is already out. Now that I know, I won't be making the same mistake and will be making people aware of the issues of being on the Vodafone network and not buying their phones from the Vodafone store!

What's worse is if Vodafone come out with something like Touch2Pay, I will lose out even though I'm on a Vodafone business plan !!! So here I am on a nice Vodafone business plan with a phone that is fully capable but completely locked out of carrier functionality because of some stupid CSC stuff which I can assure you that your average smartphone customer is completely unaware of!

For the telco service, firmware update releases (if your phone at the time has the vodafone FW) you should contact Vodafone. For the phone, its warranty, service, fixes and requests you should go to where the phone has been purchased from, talk to them.

I don't think that Dick Smith would mind changing your firmware to Vodafone's, as long as there is a valid reason for it, like a firmware related feature (example 2degree's Touch2Pay). I wouldn't even consider changing the firmware to a specific service provider's software without a real need to.

Also ask them what would happen if change it yourself, using the original stock firmware. And as I said before if Dick smith staff didn't help, go to their manager (managers usually have more authorities to validate options than staff members), then talk to Samsung if the manager can't help you.

Menabassily, I get it. I won't be asking Vodafone again. All I was saying is that in the current environment, it isn't very clear when making the purchase what "supported" actually means when buying a phone. With dumb phones, this wasn't an issue.. you just went back to the retailer you bought your device from. However, with android smart phones, dick smith isn't going to give me firmware upgrades and neither is it coming just from samsung. The carrier has a hand in it. It's not a huge issue at the moment but like I said, if Vodafone came out with something like Touch2Pay, I would be locked out of it even though I'm a Vodafone customer. Anyway, I'll check with DickSmith and will post here what I find out. Thanks.

At the moment, none! I started paying attention to the udpate process when I found out that Vodafone UK customers got a firmware update and I started checking the vodafone forums. I guess I was little miffed when I found out that updates won't be coming from Vodafone and then started investigating how the update process worked. Since they were just minor updates, it's not a huge issue at the moment but like I said, it may become one when it's carrier specific stuff that I obviously don't want to be locked out of. I am really looking forward to contactless payments (one of the big reasons for purchasing an NFC phone). I also read that Vodafone was working with Paymark etc to make this happen. Now I find out that I MAY not get it because of not having all the facts when making the purchase. Obviously, this isn't a huge issue for android veterans but users who are moving from other smartphone platforms would be thoroughly confused by all this. It's definitely NOT transparent!

I know a few friends who are 2degrees customers and got some parallel Imported I9300 and they have tried very hard to get the 2degrees firmware so that they can use the Touch2Pay features. It's kinda of a blessing to have that firmware, and I won't imagine the Vodafone one to be any different at all except for the Touch2Pay support.

So you might get even luckier if 2degrees gets their FW update tested and approved before Vodafone ;) and I also have a gut feeling that Touch2Pay is going to join Vodafone soon.

That or else if you find out that you really really need the vodafone FW, then a work around would be to find someone who is already on vodafone and get their stock rom (using the methods outlined in this thread earlier) and update yours.. its a long way around.. but atleast a way around to you using the vodafone specific rom and so you get vodafone updates..

Since you don't really need to change your firmware, my advice is, wait to see who'll release its update first.

Then you can either say "Thank God I didn't get the Vodafone firmware" or "Damn, I should have purchased the phone from Vodafone"

Either way, we the geeks will try to push both providers to give the Jelly Bean power to the people. Amen. :D

Vodafone NZ have already relased the first MR for 4.0.4 to our customers via OTA and we have another MR in test now (no it's not JB)

oh .. okay.. is Touch2Pay an app that's on the phone because I don't see such an app even though I have the 2degrees CSC?
