credit cards are more convenient, safer, and rewards customers.

Where do you think those rewards were coming from? From your wallet to your wallet, with a bit skimmed off the top. CC reward schemes are not a deal for you. I also found convenience the same, just type in bank account number and check the checkboxes.

The only point I really agree with is the fear of overdraft fees, but that sounds like an issue you should solve with budgeting, not easy access to credit. Not trying to judge, but budgeting is free and CC aren't, not to mention the temptation of spending more than you can afford.

credit cards can be free for consumers, companies no, they get charged a fee, but they make it easier for their customer meaning a happier customer meaning more likely for repeat business.  I understand large transactions charging a CC fee (for example, I bought a $5000 wardrobe from wardrobe plus, they charged a 2% CC fee, which is fine, thats a large dent for them).

every year my CC costs me nothing and I get about $300 back in cash back.  so yeah, cc == I'm happy, direct debit == I'll go elsewhere.

obviously theres plenty of people here who agree CC fees are bad.  theres plenty that disagree too.  and the end of the day its 2Degrees decision, i just think its a poor one and will make me change to bigpipe.

Cash and eftpos is essentially free, as they tend to be fixed costs, no matter what the amount that is paid. eg Staff costs, and terminal fee.s Credit cards however have a scaled fee based on how much is paid. So I can see the logic with it.

However it is really a price increase for those people paying by that method of payment. IMO it is somewhat similar to companies downsizing their packets of foods, but keeping the same price.

Wouldn't the credit card fee costs be part of the contract 2D has with the credit card companies, and being the size they are you would expect them to have a good contract with low fees.  It is just a money grab.

1.8% is a pretty good rate. They'll no doubt be on a blended rate to be negotiating that. Government departments that would have significantly more turnover than 2degrees pay 1.4% whrough Westpac who is the Government bank.

You have to remember interchange on premium cards (ie Platinum) is 2.10% and that excludes bank charges on top.

Wouldn't the rate the government pays be commerically sensitve between them and their provider?

AdamWarner: nzkiwiman,

2degrees needs to clarify their approach to manual monthly Bill Payments. In the meantime this is working for me:

In https://secure.2degreesbroadband.co.nz/summary/profile both Direct Debit and Credit Card are unticked.

I have set up a Bill Payment using the Internet Banking details set out in https://help.2degreesmobile.co.nz/app/answers/detail/a_id/217.

Most importantly you need to enter your Customer Number correctly when you initially set up the Payee with your bank. If it is six digits put a zero in front of it.

Later check https://secure.2degreesbroadband.co.nz/summary/paymenthistory. You should see an entry like this:

2017-01-24 PAYMENT - Thank you: A/P 2017/01/23 XXXX XXXXXXX Payment $amount Balance $ 0.00

By checking this you can be assured 2degrees has received your payment. The Customer Number the bank passes on means 2degrees can match the payment to your account with 100% accuracy.

And since your bank stores the Bill Payment details you can be confident any future payments you make will be correctly received.

Thank you for the information. I'm going to look into doing it this way.
Do you generally pay the bill early (when you get it) or wait till closer to the due date? I think to remind me to pay it I'd have to set up a calendar alert or else pay it as soon as I got it in email.

JayADee, when making a Bill Payment via your bank you select (a) the Payee (in this case 2degrees Broadband), (b) your account to pay from, (c) the date for the Bill Payment and (d) the amount of the Bill Payment.

So you can enter a Bill Payment into the system on the day you receive your email (so you don't forget) and the bank will pay it on the day you specify.

Well heck, all this time I've paid bills online and I didn't know that! Thanks. 😀👍

You can also usually set a bill payment to repeat on the same day every month. Then you can forget about it. I did mine 5 days before due date to allow for weekends and public holidays.

1.42% is the rate all Government departments charge for credit card processing and all publically state this is the fee passed on by Westpac and that they don't make anything from this. In light of that it's not commercially sensitive.

Thank you for the detailed instructions.

I see that ANZ have 2D Broadband listed as a payee which makes it even easier

(have just removed my credit card details and next month will test a direct payment - once confirmed working, I'll test an automatic direct payment set for around the 20th of the month)

But on the flipside, you do wonder why companies would want to annoy good paying customers, as it gives them the opportunity to pause and look what other deals are in the market.

Have just spent the last hour doing that. I've been considering moving from 2D for a while and this was the push I needed to check out the deals on offer. Looks like we'll be switching to Spark.

Ok, I've got to admit it... I've copped out and stayed with 2D. We need a landline (elderly rellies) and wanted to keep it so it would have required a bit of rewiring and a new phone on Spark or moving to another voip provider and as everything just works at present that seemed like to much drama. I've even done one worse and signed up for their 24 month promo so I could upgrade to the 7490 and save $432.

I will be paying through internet banking from now on though, after all I've still got some dignity!....

Indirectly you are paying that $300 to get it back though, which is why the whole interchange issue has to (and will be) ending.

Expect your $300 cash back to probably drop to 1/3 of that once interchange payments are cut.

Yes, this I have done for my rates for every 2 weeks. I even knew the set date function was there it just never crossed my mind to use it as a payment delaying tactic. 😀

5 days ahead sounds reasonable.

Yeah, I tend to stick with them because the VOIP and internet on one bill is convenient. If Bigpipe had both...

I hate contracts so I'm not sure what I'll do if our 7390 dies.

But yeah, internet banking for sure.

agreed, I like to separate things out as much as possible, so have different provider for

- internet (2degrees)
- phone (2talk)
- domain (domains4less)
- email (gmail)

makes switching providers a lot easier.

2talk is pretty great, a little tricky for a layman to setup but not all that difficult.   works really well on a fritzbox (what I have)
