Ironclad: I too have a 8150 Ideos, i had trouble with mine roaming at Lake Hood near Ashburton, it roamed ok once out of Christchurch but lost service at Lake Hood and never regained it, i only realised something was wrong when we got back to Ashburton and still had no service.
It took a restart for it to work again, it has done it twice now once it has lost service it will not always regain it without a restart, it makes me not trust it when driving out of town you never know if it has regained service without looking at the phone.

Lake Hood is a notorious cellular blackspot - XT drops out not far from Lake Hood.

2DegreesCare:  I'll pass this onto our RF team to look into this.

Can you PM me an alternative contact number in case we need to call you back.

Sure if you need to call me you can use the mobile number provided (as long as I'm not at the farm clearly) or 03 348 7235 (which is published in the whitepages and our web site, so I see no issue putting in on GZ).

Email is much quicker: don@bowenvale.co.nz  (goes to Gmail and pushes to my phone, one feature I like so much I have actually trippled my data allowance spend to the 1GB plan!)

However, how about just reporting back to the list.  I'm sure many people here would be very interested to hear what can be cone about this so I don't have to manually change things on my phone and how quickly your team are able to come up with a more sensible technical solution that doesn't involve me having to remember to reprogram the settings on my phone every time I pop 5 minutes out of town.

Thanks. We advise customers to keep their personal details secure and would prefer to ask specific questions on a 1-1 basis away from the general forum.  However we are happy to post solutions on here whenever possible.  Usually a manual search helps to lock into the network in these situations.

No doubt johnr, my people will be speaking with your people.  :)

Agreed.  The details I provided are in the public domain already.

2DegreesCare: and would prefer to ask specific questions on a 1-1 basis away from the general forum.

Yes.  That annoys me personally.  I much prefer it in the public space then other people can see exactly what sort of questions might be asked.

So far this thread will have educated other readers on at least two key points and provided some useful advice.

1. When you're in between 2D and VF coverage you may have to set manual network selection on your phone.

2.  The 8150 doesn't seem to do this for you.  If it's important to you, don't buy this phone!

3.  The 8150 gets confused and can drop all networks with no explanation.

4.  VF customer support on GZ is very prompt and their guys are willing to help people who are not even their customers - Good.

5.  2Deg customer support is not quite so quick on Sunday night, but clearly paying attention and responds with short helpful suggestions  - Good.

6.  VF and 2Deg show a willingness to use social media to solve problems and are willing to esculate issues to higher levels very quickly - Good!

I'd also like to know what the network technology can be made to do?

Can the 2Deg boarder be told to let me go sooner and force me on to the roaming cell sooner?

Can the VF cell be told to confirm it's picked me up?

How do the base stations work and how much control do you have over them?

How much network monitoring happens to ensure I get the best possible experience?

How much testing on different phones is done before they're sold in NZ.

Sure, if I buy a phone off Price Angles you have no control over that phone, but I got one from HN.  Do you have any control over that as they sell thousands of them?

Quick update: Had a follow up call from 2Deg today.

VF coverage is known to be good on the farm.

They're interested to do some testing to better understand how my 8150 is working with a few different settings and agreed that having to manually swap networks is less than ideal.

It seems on the boarder my phone is getting very confused and hanging on to the 2deg cell when it should be doing a hand over.

There's also some issues with the data connections not moving networks as I understand it. I didn't know that, so it's great to see they're very upfront about what their network will and won't do. That makes improving performance so much easier from my pov.

I'll keep reporting back.

Ok, so the 2Deg guy rings me... tells me he's going to email me... I'm still waiting for that one to get to me.

Friday I got a text message asking me to rate the service on my fault... hummm, not sure how I should rate it. I didn't get the email or the follow up call that was talked about.

I'm assuming they must have done "something" because today my phone is roaming out at the farm. So it's getting closer to 'working'.

Coming back into town the phone just dropped the networks again and it wasn't till I noticed I didn't have service at home.

Something has improved though. Today I was able to reselect the 2Deg 3G network without having to reboot my phone.

However the roaming data connection is very confused. I set up another 50mb of national data (in addition to my 1gb of 2deg data) and my Gmail sprang into life, but Sipdroid wasn't able to register with the sip server at 2Talk (it registers just fine on 2Deg 3G).

I'm quite confused about data though.

"Settings --> wireless & Networks --> Mobile Networks --> Access Point Names" has 3 entries:

* 2degrees
* Internet
* mms

Only 2degrees and Internet can be selected.

Often when the data doesn't work (which does happen a number of times a week) I just change the selection from one to the other and the data starts working again. I'd love to know why there are 3 options and why swapping between 2 of them fixes the data.

All I can say is it's not very robust at present and quite frustrating.

I too have data problems when going from 2 degrees to roaming on VF on my Ideos, i found removing the 2Degees profile and leaving the "internet" and "MMS" was the only way to get MMS's to work.

The data roaming seems more reliable with only the two profile there as well.

The MMS profile is generally tagged as being for MMS and so the phone will only allow it to be selected for that purpose. There is no benefit trying to use the MMS APN for internet traffic as it will not work.

Choosing another APN has the effect of resetting the data session. Anything that does the same (In/out of Airplane mode, data off/on from settings, to/from wifi, data off/on from APNdroid) should have the same effect. You might find it more convenient eg to use APNdroid with a widget on the home screen to do that instead. As a workaround.

if you check out the sticky with the APN settings you will see that
APN:2degrees provides a private IP address and you will be NATed to the Internet. This also needs to be used when using a WAP proxy if your phone doesn't support HTTP directly.

APN:Internet provides a public IP address and you are NOT NATed and have in effect direct access to the internet.
