And this was the main announcement."

Dam I was hoping for something else.

Recently spoke to a rep about Hamilton and the future of cell tower placements. He mentioned that Hamilton and Tauranga were next in line but they were holding off due to roll out of a 4g network.

"4G network"? The rep probably doesn't know much. He was probably talking about an HSPA+ upgrade or similar, surely?

He was very adamant, he mentioned that he had just returned from a meeting discussing this and other issues.

when you say rep, do you mean sales rep? property rep? sub-contractor? random person in a 2degrees top?

While the next build of our network is still in the planning stage, it will not be held off due to 4G roll out.

a store manager told me the same thing (4G coming soon) last weekend.

mind you, he also said that the iPhone 3GS works best on 2Degrees network and Telecom has a 'fake' 3G network, so I decided to take his 4G comment with a pinch of salt.

It was a support rep via the support call centre.
I agree that this info is to be taken as NonprayingMantis put it "with a pinch of salt"

I should not imagine that they would hold off on erecting new cell sites just to wait for 4g. It could take years, and that may anoy a few of us...

Well, LTE wasn't "4G" until last year either. It was supposed to be LTE-A. Originally, 4G was supposed to be 1Gbp/s. Pressure from Americans...

Yes, it does *sound* a lot better, doesn't it? But then there's that pesky real world. The one in which the "slowest" network actually got the best real scores when Computerworld tested their VoIP on iPhone apps...

Now now, that's a bit unfair isn't it? I was always under the impression that data speeds on mobile networks were a direct result of the loading of other devices using them (combined with other factors, of course). If so, it would make perfect sense that the less loaded network is the fastest.

Now, keeping it that way... that should be fun for you.
