The difference for me is 1% vs 99%.
And I will choose a telco to satisfy my 99% needs, rather than caring about the 100%, and all the least important factors which I never use.

So 2degrees is my choice after using Vodafone for 8 years.

You make a lot of assumptions with that. The biggest is that what you use is the same as everyone else.

Three of our four mobiles are on 2 degrees, I refuse to move mine until I can send international texts to the locations I need, Vodafone still meets my needs in the other areas. That is why I am still a Vodafone customer since the BellSouth days.

True, usage pattern is different for everyone, I am only stating my own usage pattern here, as I said this is my choice.

My main assumption is really just a higher proportion of mobile cost for everyone is national & local call & txt, which should be reasonably correct isn't it?
There is nothing wrong with choosing a cheap prepaid plan for local calls & txt.

Plus, do get in contact with the 2degrees staff and express your concerns, I logged a fault last Friday, and I actually got a call from a 2D staff today regarding the fault, and they told me they test called every single number I supplied to them, and I received very helpful tips from them as well.

This is the first time I received a call back from a telco, I am happy with 2degrees service and I think it well worths the money I am paying for.

OTHER: Thinkpad E14 + Asus Vivobook + Intel NUC5i3 + A family of Raspberry Pi x 9 + Amazon Echo

i have to agree with you... overseas sms is unreliable. i have talked to 2degrees in the past but basically there is not much they can do. i took their advise and get friends from the other countries to contact and report the issues to their telco providers (many many times). interestingly, 90% of the time, they received my texts. however, i only received maybe 10% of the texts that they sent to me. it is not like they dont work at all - it works but only 10% of the time.

What annoys me when 2 Degrees says "tell your friends in X country to tell their mobile operator" is that the very good 2D reps don't seem to grasp the concept that outside of 2D most CSRs at most mobile call centres really don't give a hoot about the problem because frankly they aren't as interested as 2D seems to be about customer problems.

I would has thought that 2D should be in the best position to seek resolution rather than our friends and family talking to their provider who probably doesn't care.

We're not. From their perspective, we (2degrees) are a cost. Their customers, on the other hand, are a source of revenue. Who do you think they're more likely to listen to?

Which operator(s) were you having problems with? The ones I mainly hear complaints about are Vodafone Group Operating Companies, who have even less incentive than normal to assist us, an upstart competitor to a sister company.

I'm talking about markets like Hong Kong, Malaysia, Indonesia. They don't exactly offer Customer "Care" in my experience and it is honestly pointless asking people to call. In fact some places there isn't even a helpdesk but instead you go to "service centres" and queue for hours to talk to someone. Staff there are nice but unable to much more than the basics.

Honestly I haven't dealt with this since your launch. I gave up and something else came along that suited my use better. Since coming back to you I haven't looked into this yet as we've used alternate means of communication but if I do try again and there are problems I will definitely be in touch. If I have the time I will probably also test it just to know.

I was just saying that originally when I was told to get the other person to talk to their operator it was truly pointless and/or logistically impossible.

Ah, fair enough. Well, to the best of my knowledge we don't tend to get too many complaints about Asian operators any more, at least in the countries you mentioned.

If/when you do have an issue, be sure to let us know.

I think what you mean is that you can't receive messages from those places, which is completely different, and again, outside my control.

Apart from the fact that you apparently do know the operators, I do take your point, and that is the other reason why we suggest you get your friends to do the talking. Presumably they know which operator they are on even if you don't.

Also remember that we don't necessarily know either. NZ isn't the only country in the world with number portability. And number portability is a big part of the issue.

Wow, that plan is looking to be some seriously good value.
I was holding out until Apple releases information about the newest iPhone and then moving back to

Vodafone to get the iPhone on a 24 month Smart 1 contract so the phone didn't cost me over $1k and I got more benefits, but 2degress have released a plan that almost matches the Smart 1 plan (50MB less data when you exclude the 3GB giveaway) for half the cost.

Maybe I should seriously look at getting one of those Ideos X5 phones and move into the smartphone age.
