openmedia: My own tipping point is simply coverage. At home I get no 3G coverage on Vodafone or 2degrees. In fact I barely get any coverage inside my house on either of these networks. I'm not that remote, on the Glen Eden side of Titirangi. A couple of streets away I get perfect 3G coverage.

Then you're better off with 2degrees -- at least you'd be on EDGE instead of GPRS. It's not great but it's a noticeable improvement on GPRS.  And great for my aging HTC Dream which doesn't do the extended range 850/900mhz 3G that vodafone and telecom offer.

Ragnor: Bestmates on VF prepay is why I haven't moved to 2degree's.

do you have more than one bestmate?  how much calling/txting do you do?  the paymonthly plan minutes plus the current 100 bonus minutes and the 1000 included texts cover me for all my texting and calling -  a bestmate or weekend calling addon wouldnt add any value for me.

small hijack here... dont you just wish they made all phones with all radios these days?  my palm treo 750, which i finally retired last week, worked great on the telecom 3G 850 network and had GSM and 3G 2100 too.

While I'm with 2degrees, I'm going to be setting up my inlaws a PC at home soon, so this is about them.

I *thought* of using a 3G USB stick for their broadband.  They are very novice PC users and would not use much, maybe 500 MB a month of which half would be PC updates.

DSL = approx $30.  Obviously a faster connection.
2Degrees = $20 for 1GB and though slower realistically  the ~1-2mbps connection would be enough for them.

But - all the faffing about with buying data packs regularly would just be a constant pain.  They wouldn't know how to do it.  I'd be there every month.  And the 6 month pack barely works out better than the DSL connection.
It could have been the perfect solution for a low end NZ internet user, but it just doesn't work out.

Give us a low usage 12 month plan, say around 10GB for max $200, or maybe 6GB for $150, which is basically currency converted what you get in Oz (actually not quite as good but hey I'm being realistic :) ) - and it would be a viable option over a low end DSL connection.

Would be a useful alternative to people on dial up as well who can't afford or won't prioritise  the expense of DSL.

Well, you can setup monthly auto-topup of say $25 and then buy the 1GB pack. It will autopurchase whenever it is used up or expires, whichever comes sooner.

If you also setup normal auto-topup with confirmation off, and after a purchase, you have less than $2.50 remaining, the normal auto-topup will fire and ensure there is still money for next time.

There is the 12Gb for $150 pack, which lasts 180 days (~6months) surely twice a year isn't too much faffing about?
plus of course as salty says you could just do an auto top up

I helped my Mum shift from TelstraClear DSL to a 2degrees 3G stick and Vodafone Home Wireless, which gets her 1GB of internet and a landline for $45/mo.   The only complaint I've heard were that Vodafone stuffed up her number port -- international calls and some calls from NZ weren't coming though.

The auto-topup and auto-renew stuff make it much simpler, although she's still working through a $150 topup from when the 2degrees store in town was offering doubled topups.

Yeah the auto top up is a good idea (thanks Salty), though my hesitancy with that is its kind of not cool to possibly have a heavy month, burn through 2 packs, then not use much for a few months, but have bought 4 packs in the process.  The cost benefit is lost over dsl with such patterns.

I use the $150 pack on my phone.  It just doesn't work out much better than DSL.  They ARE the types that will never drop the security of their land line for health reasons, so this may be more specific to my scenario.

I personally need to see a bit of benefit given the slower speed, higher pings and likely a bit less stability that comes with a 3G connection over something hard wired.

Actually, also for me on my phone, I'm 4 months into my period, and have used just 2 gigs of my 12GB.  100MB packs would not have cut it, I'd have bought 20 and spent $200, but lighter, longer plans seem missing.  I won't be renewing my plan, and will buy when really needed as a result.  I'd prefer not to have to think about it though.

No pleasing some people eh :)

Agree this would be a good way to go for people happy with dropping their fixed land line but still wanting a normal landline number.  Not for the in-laws in my case but yep good suggestion.

Vodafone's poor data performance is the main thing stopping me leaving XT in Dunedin. XT is more reliable, has good data speeds, and can maintain a data connection. If 2degrees had towers in Dunedin and down the harbour I'd seriously consider leaving XT, especially for the $19 Prepay Pack.

Lol he's probably telling the truth. He works for Voda so he probably gets a company phone with like a billion minutes and unlimited texts and data for nothing (slight exageration....?)

...good point. No wonder he sticks loyally to the vodafone regime.

I moved the wife to 2D ages ago and its been great for her. She uses a phone as a phone and thats it.

Me, I have a smartphone and want to use it as such so all Im interested in is data. I can comfortably do 1.5Gb in a month so VF gets my money for now. As soon as they drop that or 2D come to the party I will reconsider.

I'm confused by people who claim to use this much. I work for 2degrees - basically I get unlimited free data, and I'm on 3G all day. And I only use about 500MB a month max.

Salty - How about gettign that message through to the right channel within 2D?

I am a fresh convert to both 2D and smartphones (bought an Ideos X5 when i went across to 2D), I am loving the freedom of 3G however 2D seem to cater for non users (50mb) or extreme users (1GB+/mth), i would happily pay $10/mth for 500mb of broadband zone data as it is just not economic to buy a 1gb pack and waste maybe half of it every month, even extend the 1GB pack to 60 days expiry would work.

rant over :D

Actually one more rant, how about bringing in a nice car cradle and maybe some cases for the X5's as given their relatively obscurity proper accessories are not the easiest to find.
