Snackos: They could start "moving forward" by actually adding infrastructure so people don't have to wait months just to get an internet connection.

Huh? I'm not quite sure what country you've living in.

$1 billion has been spent in the last 3 years on cabinetisation to deliver 10Mbps + connections to 84% of the population and the RBI rollout which is being funded by the Government will increase this to 92% over the next 6 years.

In virtually every urban area of NZ there are no such thing as part waiters - these issues have all been resolved by the cabinetisation project.

In the case of the OP it's part of the RBI rollout and will see equipment installed. Upgrading a network isn't like going to a McDonalds and ordering a Big Mac and seeing it magically appear before your eyes in under 60 seconds - it takes time and the timeframes and coverage maps for RBI DSL have been public for a number of months.

Don't really want to be starting a rant or go off topic but I find it ridiculous that quite a considerable amount of people in rural (and even urban) NZ still cannot get broadband and will not get it. Meanwhile, some random location in the middle of nowhere with an estimated population of around 5 is getting RBI...

I was on a waiting list of about 12, the wait time was going to be 6 months, but i managed to get connected within about 4 weeks (by means i cannot express in a public forum).

Unless your ISP bumped you up the list of their customers who were waiting for a port on that same exchange, what someone has done for you sounds extremely unethical, and no one likes queue jumpers.

I can't confirm if any other port waiters on the same exchange were also given ports at the same time, as I did not have contact with them.

I can confirm that I did not do anything that any other NZ'er could do, I don't have special contacts or anything like that.

The person/people that helped me asked that I did not share the means with the online community as it would add far too much work to their already busy schedule.

Well, good news is that I don't seem to be a port waiter anymore. They texted me yesterday to say its all ready to connect and I got the genius the same day.

Bad news is that it doesn't work.  It gets ADSL sync and nothing else. No WAN IP or anything. The log seems to suggest it cannot establish a PPP connection.  CSR was stumped so it has been escalated.

But at least I was only a port waiter for a week so baby steps....Smile

I am also a port waiter in urban Taupo (Acacia Bay). Started out at #8 a couple of months ago and now at #4. So I am hoping it is only a few more months. The frustratingthing is the Telecom cabinet is right next door! I am on xnet/wxc

Currently using Telecom 3g. Do I have any other options in Taupo?

Thanks
Warren

Do Telecom pay for the 3G and is the plan comparable to the DSL connection? If you are only concerned about speeds right now there is other, faster 3G sticks available.

Im wondering if there is a waiting list in my area for broadband?  Ive had it since 2001, started out on the old Jetstart.  Could someone from Orcon check for me?  orcon username same as geekzone username.

If there is a waiting list in my area then im going to stick an array of anttenas on my roof angled around the neighbourhood, and use webbased login and paypal form.

I asked WXC to pay for 3G but no joy with that. Not really a speed issue. I am on a 7.2Mbps stick and this is fast enough to consume data at an alarming rate. It's more to do with cost. 4Gb for $80 (or 8Gb for $160 I think) versus $1 per Gb on WXc
I can burn through a Gb in a day using my work VPN so need to be very careful.

Maybe I should try talking directly to telecom?

2degrees has 12GB for $150, if you're in a Mobile Broadband zone.

Don't think this includes Taupo last time I checked
But will follow it up.

Thanks
