freitasm: As seen on reports today MyRepublic is about to go live... I've got an invite for the launch event, happening pretty soon:

Are you going to that?

'change the game'
'its a game changer'

such a tired cliche.

And based on the earlier statements by MyRepublic people, it doesn't look like there are gonna be much "game changers" here, but we'll see what they announce at the launch party this Thursday! It may just well be me eating all the sausage rolls there! :P

I love sausage rolls!!

But I didn't receive an invite for some reason. :(
Anybody want to have me as their "+1"?

Maybe you should change your name on here first.. then maybe you'll get an invite! :P

Suspect BigPipe's UFB pricing would have put a slight dampener on things...

I'm not suprised.

I am confused though what their "Gaming Privileges" will mean for people taking that up in New Zealand.

Maybe a real IP and not hidden behind CGNAT?

What were people expecting?

The reality of the residential ISP market is that there is very close to zero margin in it, it's purely a numbers game which is why big providers buy each other out. You need a lot of customers to be making money if you're only making a few $$ per connection per month.

It wouldn't surprise me if we start to see a lot of pricing start to increase by early to mid next year once the land grab starts to settle down.

some sort of customer routing, based on what they did in singapore.
but i don't really see how that will make any difference here, except for a few people

most games are hosted in oz, right?  So just how 'custom' can they get?

No way can they charge $15 for global mode when slingshot and orcon do it for free, and good services like unblock-us etc is only $5.
Seems like it might include some content too, although given the siutuation with rights, suspect it will be foriegn stuff - asian language etc.

other than that, seems pretty expensive and not competitive at all even with the big 5, let alone with the small guys.

very, very weak for a 'game changer'

Most games now yes. We still have NZ/AU servers so custom routing if that what "Gaming Privileges" is makes it really bad since you're only paying for more upload.
I constantly get 30-40 to Sydney and as low as 12 to anything Orcon(my isp) doesn't host(gotta love Orcon TF2 servers ;) )

I'm guessing they also aren't exactly on-board with my LFC up here which would be NorthPower Fibre. My address says it's unavailable.

Doesn't excite me at all looking next to BigPipe.

$20 extra gets you a gigabit router and VoIP line over BigPipe's Starter UFB, $10 extra gives you half the download speed of BigPipe UFB Pro, plus the router+voip and whatever gaming stuff they're doing. 12 month contract, plus a $50 deposit for the router.

$15 extra for the global mode stuff seems steep compared to Unotelly.

The title tag on their website says "MyRepublic | 1 Gbps - The World's Fastest Fibre Broadband" .....
