Looks like the cabinet has been "upgraded" from Conklin to ADSL2+, but retains the same backhaul as before. I.E. where cost is prohibitive to run fibre, Chorus still need to upgrade cabinet from ATM to Ethernet, but they might not upgrade the actual backhaul. So It's a Conklin mark two :( Still possible that there will be additional backhaul coming, maybe they had issues getting this in or still pending some sort off upgrade. I guess we wait to hear the official from Chorus.

Correct above - while the physical connection may show 17 Mbps or more, the actual backhaul may be limited, and that's why even plugging the router directly to the cabinet still shows limited speeds.

Sbiddle mentioned this to some of us last night. Let's wait for Nick to confirm this or not.

Hi All,

I followed up on this this morning. We have had some conversations with Chorus, the limitation is between the cabinet and connectivity (backhaul) back into Chorus network. This particular ISAM used to be a Conklin unit as  mentioned. The ISAM recently replaced the old ATM network (around mid-Oct). The backhaul remains the same (E1 is capable of 2mb per second) i.e: it's not fibre connected, I suspect this is due to the costs of running fibre from that cabinet back to somewhere else. The sync speed mentioned is the sync between you and that cabinet, in this specific situation, there isn't a lot we can do to resolve as it sits on the Chorus network. This leaves a couple of potentials options that could be explored such as looking for any Wireless ISPs in the area, or using Fixed Wireless as a solution.

Nick.

All they’ve done is made it worse , I can’t even make a phone call (phone is connected to modem) and I can hardly open a webpage. Let alone study.

I've done a few custom wireless installs around the BoP / Waikato area, so feel free to message me your contact details if interested?

Thanks

There is nothing to fix as it's not actually broken and working as designed

Unless you are going to pay for the fibre to be laid to the cabinet then you will need to look at other options for internet

Is there a way to change the E1 signal , it’s showing on the chorus system that I should be getting 17mbsp, but I get on average 0.40mbsp. The cabinet just has limitations, they could continue to upgrade the cabinet instead of just upgrading apart of it , does it really need fibre ? Adsl2+ can go from 8-24mbsp, there must be something that can be done , to get me even upto 5mbsp

Have you messaged @coffeebaron to inquire about 'custom' fixed wireless options?

And if that is a no go, who did you ask about satellite? Have you checked with @gravityinternet ?

There are always options - there are not that many places around where between satellite, fixed wireless, solar and a wireless ptp link that you actually can't get a usable internet connection.

The fibre people mentioned above is not from the cabinet to your home but from the cabinet to the rest of the Chorus network. Unless that is upgraded at some point your connection cannot get to the max speed as it will be limited at the cabinet.

It will come down to Chorus plans to upgrade the cabinet connection to the network.

Contact CoffeeBaron as above to see if there are wireless options in your area.

think of it this way, you have a fire hose from your house to the cabinet, and there is a garden hose between the cabinet and the next piece of infrastructure.

there are also a few others connected to the same cabinet trying to draw internet from the garden hose.

Until someone upgrades the garden hose you are going to be stuck with slow internet.

Im surprised a satellite service wouldn't work, or do you just consider it cost prohibitive?
