I was on Telstra Cable for a while in Wellington and it was routine to see 1.1MB (yeah.. great to see download manager switch from rating in KB to rating in MB) downloads..
and torrents of Linux Live CD's (go get some.. the security ones are wicked) where routine 500KB. I could download faster than watch the.. um.. Live CDs.

Snap.. yeah, good luck with that. Unless your downloading something from Japan.... for some reason the international link to japan rocks!

For so long Orcon customers where complaining about international speed issues and still no solution.
Orcon support staff is just spining us and the results are getting worst.

I can see you where active on other posts but not on this one !

It would be fair to admit that Orcon international bandwiidth is overselled OR orcon does not know how to setup routing/int. traffic priority ?

When you see such huge difference in Download & Upload speeds between New Zealand vs USA/Australia destinations, then you know for sure that Orcon have too slow/overused/overselled international pipes. They have offered us MORE then they can GIVE/Provide!

As it has been mentioned in this thread already (not by me), no residential broadband subscriber has dedicated bandwidth. If you really need a 10Mbps international pipe I am sure that our business team would be more than happy to quote you on it, but I can assure you that it will run into the thousands of dollars per month.

Because of this you will very rarely acheieve the same speeds outside NZ as you do inside NZ, this isn't just with Orcon - this is with any ISP in NZ. We at Orcon offer one of the most generous bandwidth allowances per subscriber in the country, particularly on our unbundled network (because this is ADSL2+ - we allocate more bandwidth per subscriber to allow you to take advantage of the extra line speed).

There are some users in this thread who do have genuine problems, and as always I really encourage you to lodge a support ticket, as the tech guys here are more than happy to help out.

But, if you are expecting to get the same international speeds as you get locally that is not a problem we can solve.

Duncan,

I would never expect international speeds matching my local speeds, but are we to assume a significant speed drop during peak times even when the network is stable? Or should we be getting a similar speed no matter what time of day it is?

There are some users in this thread who do have genuine problems, and as always I really encourage you to lodge a support ticket, as the tech guys here are more than happy to help out.

But, if you are expecting to get the same international speeds as you get locally that is not a problem we can solve.

My understanding is that even a business running an Orcon ADSL2+ business broadband connection can not get 'committed' or 'guaranteed' bandwidth. I believe you need to use UNS or fibre to achieve this.

After checking with a contact in Orcon, I also understand that on ADSL/ADSL2+ there is no prioritisation of business traffic over residential traffic either.

international speed issues for me start during 6pm onwards,am on zeroshock(non-llu). Orcon has been the worst ISP i have ever signed up with in my entire life. The only proper service they gave me was during Jan-April. From there on, I could not do anything.Constant disconnections from games,superslow downloads. etc.

It was fine for about a week,a week ago, since last monday. it died again. More bandwith this time maybe..?and when i mean more maybe x10 more.

I've been with Orcon over a year now. I think part of the problem is that the NZ performance is so good now, especially if you're on LLU, that it makes overseas performance look bad. And it can be, especially in the evenings.

Duncan, I'd make the following suggestions -

1. Ditch Zero shock - it's obviuosly being abused.
2. Tune your magic Cisco box to effectively prioritise traffic when demand is high. I know this isn't easy with P2P, but we're all paying you quite a lot of money every month so that we can use the Internet. And sometimes we just can't.

Dear duncan.
I am on LLU. I understand that the International speeds will be slower than National speeds.
What I do not like is that my international speeds are getting progressively worse. ie the quality of service is dropping.
Also. I have left two trouble tickets now and Orcon customer service have not had the decency to reply to me.
I am paying for any excess usage over my 10Gb/month so expect to be able to use it. So far I have used between 10 - 11 Gb / month.
If I get to the end of this month and have not been able to use my 10Gb due to the deteriorating service, I will consider moving as Orcon cannot provide what I am paying for. Moving means Internet, Local service and tolls. Of course it means that I will not transfer my Vodafone account to Orcon when you offer cellular service as I will be gone.
I am not really interested in other people abusing a service you provide. I am interested in the service that Orcon sells to me. If you have a problem with other people, manage them. Do not allow their actions to affect me.
I really want to support Orcon but will not if the service is poor (ie not getting a reply to my ticket) and I have a service that is slowly getting worse.
I suggest that you bite the bullet and put in the capacity required. I know that you pay a fixed price for you data capacity and then charge us a variable price based on usage. Therefore maling variable revenue from Fixed cost. I don't mind that but do mind poor quality.
Up to you guys at Orcon.

Hi,

I've had this problem for the last 6 weeks, my problem at first was that I couldn't download fast AT ALL off alot of international sites my speeds for downloading were 50-150kb/s. Previously I could get over 500kb/s off files individually with a combined maximum of 1200kb/s.

2 weeks afterwards I decided to give them a ring (as previously it usually cleared up after a while), my call consisted of resetting my router, checking the phone plugs in the house, all that kind of non-sense when I've already tried it (Network Admin in real life). After about an hour they ended up telling me that telecom has changed the exchange back down to ADSL1 and I was previous getting ADSL2 speeds.

Now theres a few problems with this "theory" as even basic ADSL1 speeds back before 2 years ago were greater then 200kb/s, also the fact that later that night I was getting high speeds again as normal. It resumed as an on and off thing for about a week then I noticed a pattern, during the day the speeds were absolutely crap then after 1am they would shoot way back up. This lasted until last week when it has been all over the place as if I'm being throttled.

Even as I'm writing this right on 1:00am my speeds just went straight back up heres my speedtest.net results,

My normal results are always between 11,000 to 13,000 downstream, the upstream has always remained around 800-950 with no problems whatsoever.

Here are my router stats.

What do you all think about this? Oh and I live in Sumner, Christchurch and am on the Orcon@Home Purple plan w/full downstream and upstream.

It seems I spoke too soon, my download is higher then 150kb/s but even with the 9700 Downstream the speeds are below half of what I normally get. Here is a tracert to www.google.com then one to a rapidshare server.

Speed has dramatically gone up, was downloading one file off rapidshare at 120kb/s (see below for picture), and stable at 1428kb/s on 2 files together. Here is the speedtest.net results now.

I have no doubts that this won't stay at these speeds for the rest of the day. Will most likely drop to below 200kb/s after lunch. While I have the chance I'll add a picture of my flashget download off a rapidshare server, it was stable at this speed.

For some unknown reason, I woke at 5 am and could not get back to sleep. Thought that I would try to watch the today show.
It streams just fine now.
My conclusion. Orcon does not have enough International capacity to handle demand at peak time.
My suggestion. Put in the capacity. I am not getting it for free, I have paid for it already and will continue to do so when I go over my data allowance and pay per Gb. (I am on the gold plan)
I can understand that capacity takes a while to negotiate and install. Just tell me the truth. I also understand that Orcon is building out their network and money is short. I understand that Orcon may not want to commit to long term capacity if Kordia build a second International cable to NZ with Pipeworks. Problem is. Your decisions are affecting ME, and NOW.
If Orcon is truthful,I will understand and support you. If you say nothing or try to spin your way out of this, I will be gone.
It really is up to you guys.

I find it hard to believe that its just their International Capacity at peak time as in the past I never had this problem with Orcon.

Yup - not as bad as it has been but poor never the less.

Had the call from support desk on Friday evening, to my call raised Thurs evening.
Call went something like

Orcon "responding to your support call"
Me "great"
Orcon "we know what the issue was and have now fixed it"
Me "great when did you fix it"
Orcon "around midday thursday"
Me "really"
Orcon "yes"
Me "do you know when I raised my support call"
Orcon "ahh "

Orcon "ahh well we know about that issue too and are working on it"

at this point he did the only decent thing, and laughed, which I actually appreciated
