SaltyNZ: I'm confused by people who claim to use this much. I work for 2degrees - basically I get unlimited free data, and I'm on 3G all day. And I only use about 500MB a month max.

I use about 750mb per month on my iPhone. Of that about 200mb is general mobile apps and browsing and the remainder is streaming radio that I listen to during my commute to and from work during the week. Remember, the iPhone lacks a conventional FM receiver so streaming is the only way to listen to mainstream radio.

On rare occasions when I'm out and about with my Macbook Pro I may tether it to my iPhone which obviously means using a bit more data. I also go through about 500mb a month on my iPad but obviously that's a separate connection.

Actually I have a Telecom account here that I only use when I travel (inside New Zealand), with 1GB allowance. In other words I'm paying about $720/year for about 3 - 4 GB of use during that period.

I am cancelling that account this coming week and will probably just have a 2degrees SIM card handy if ever needed for mobile data...

Ragnor: Bestmates on VF prepay is why I haven't moved to 2degree's.

do you have more than one bestmate?  how much calling/txting do you do?  the paymonthly plan minutes plus the current 100 bonus minutes and the 1000 included texts cover me for all my texting and calling -  a bestmate or weekend calling addon wouldnt add any value for me.

I'm a light mobile user at the moment using 1x best mate, 1 x 50MB data and misc calls and txt's which add up (usually) to $20 or less /month.

Podcasts.

Im from England and miss the football so I subscribe to about half a dozen podcasts some of which are daily. Add in streaming the commentary of half a dozen games a month, plus listening to various BBC programmes during the morning, lots of work email via exchange lots ofpersonal email through gmail and it all adds up.

Nothing sinister going on I can assure you !!

Unless you are extremely mobile, isn't this the kind of stuff you could easily stream/store on your PC and listen with a good pair of headphones? Or even download on your PC and then transfer to the handset?

Of course 3G is there, easy to use. But what will happen to you and Alasta when the 3 GB bonus on Vodafone goes away? Will it be like a drug, and you are so addicted you will pay anything a telco charges you to keep it going?

I mean, knowing fixed broadband is so much cheaper and all...

I'm on 2degrees so I'm not relying on Vodafone's temporary marketing ploy to satisfy my needs.

Look at it this way; if I didn't use streaming radio then I would use about 250mb per month but with streaming radio I use about 750mb per month. In either case I would need to spend $20 a month on the 1Gb data pack in order to meet my needs with a bit of safety margin in case I use a bit more than normal.

So, using streaming radio isn't really costing me any extra and listening to it in real time is much better than pre-recorded podcasts considering that I'm interested in timely news and interviews.

I enjoy streaming radio and rack up the data also.
I tend to download podcasts via home PC wifi as they can get too large (and expensive)

Not really, its the kind of stuff if you dont listen to straight away it becomes irrelevant. I like to listen to it in the morning when Im eating breakfast then on my journey into work in the car. The commentary is usually at that time as well.

Quality isnt really necessary then when its competing with road noise.

I want to be able to listen to the latest podcasts which is why I download them to the phone as soon as they are available, I dont want to wait until I get home then wait until the next morning to listen to them.

What happens when/if the bonus goes away ? Ill cross that bridge when I get to it, in the meantime Ill use the phone for what it was intended, a mobile multimedia device.

Hmmm, I've started using TuneItIn Radio recently to listen to Triple J (yes, I am an Aussie). I should have another look at how that's affecting my data usage.

Of course as some of you are aware already I live out of 2degrees canopy so I don't get to listen to it all the way home... :-( I do podcasts in the morning but since Apple has not yet seen fit to allow iOS to sync podcasts without tethering to a (noisy, with an on-it's-last-legs power supply) PC I sometimes go without those and listen to - shudder - NewsTalk ZB as it's one of the only 2 stations my Jap import car can receive.

iPad Pro 11" + iPhone 15 Pro Max + 2degrees 4tw!

These comments are my own and do not represent the opinions of 2degrees.

Stop the press!

SaltyNZ is not from NZ?! I don't think he should be allowed to use that name!! Im a scot and you don't see me adding NZ to my name :P

I have an iPhone 3G on Pay Monthly 29 so it uses 50mb a month. However my spanky new iPad2 3G came with 100mb on 2° and it rolled around in that gleefully till it was all gone in a week. Now im using the 1 GB pack lol.

Im praying i can use multi connect to share data packs between my iPad and Data Stick or its gonna get expensive. If iPad2 JB is released i could technically tether, but we use my phone and stick to tether the 2 PCs in house when our internet blips off.

I'm already on 2deg, but a huge plus for me would be to increase data pack expiry dates

Doesn't have to be unlimited. 3 months would probably be perfect. Even 2 months would be nice

+1 extend data expiration dates

I am already on 2degrees too
but never bought a data pack
1G...... It takes a lot of effort for me to use all 1G within a month, 500MB is a bit too much too really
But 500MB a month would be reasonable
or let us carryover unused data packs to 2 months or something?

Plus, there is a huge gap between the 100MB & 1gb data packs, what is happening to the 500mb or else?

I'd also like to see expiry dates expanded for all packs. As a prepay user, the $19 pack looked good to me on the surface, but my usage is so light that I wouldn't get to use all the bundled TXTs and minutes before they expired (not sure on data usage yet; I'm relatively new to the Smartphone game).

P.S I think its 100% cool for Salty to append NZ to his name. As an Aussie he's basically an honorary Kiwi anyway, IMHO. Especially considering the stellar work he does around here. I know my opinion may buck the popular sentiment in NZ (and is no doubt swayed by the 12 years I spent living in NSW), but I definitely see Aussies as close mates of us Kiwis. And when living across the ditch, this was a feeling that was usually reciprocated (despite many Aussies needing some new material WRT sheep shagging jokes).

The current data offerings are great for the mobile notebook market which was where they were intended, but since you guys are now actively pushing smartphones we need smartphone data solutions.

Give me 500mb/mth broadband zone data for $10/mth and I will add it to my pay monthly plan in a heartbeat

Even $15/500mb would be reasonable wouldn't it?
