nzwaz: I am also a port waiter in urban Taupo (Acacia Bay). Started out at #8 a couple of months ago and now at #4. So I am hoping it is only a few more months. The frustratingthing is the Telecom cabinet is right next door! I am on xnet/wxc

Currently using Telecom 3g. Do I have any other options in Taupo?

Thanks
Warren

Do Telecom pay for the 3G and is the plan comparable to the DSL connection? If you are only concerned about speeds right now there is other, faster 3G sticks available.

I asked WXC to pay for 3G but no joy with that. Not really a speed issue. I am on a 7.2Mbps stick and this is fast enough to consume data at an alarming rate. It's more to do with cost. 4Gb for $80 (or 8Gb for $160 I think) versus $1 per Gb on WXc
I can burn through a Gb in a day using my work VPN so need to be very careful.

Maybe I should try talking directly to telecom?

2degrees has 12GB for $150, if you're in a Mobile Broadband zone.

Don't think this includes Taupo last time I checked
But will follow it up.

Thanks

Ah no, I don't think it does sorry. I must have missed the bit about Taupo.

You're not actually near a Whisper cabinet supplying DSL which was rolled out as part of the FTTN rollout. You've covered by the Tapuo exchange (www.chorus.co.nz/sat) and are fed by an old ADSL1 only cabinet that's probably got an old Nokia DSLAM in it.

The cabinet is TPO/H if that means something. I have attached an image of it. Looks like I was wrong expecting to have ADSL2 with this right next door

That cabinet is on the RBI list for YR4/Q3, so a bit over 3 years away.

Slightly OT but something I've been wondering, would all the new FTTN cabinets that have been installed over the past few years have enough DSL ports to cover every house that the cabinet serves? or limited to say 70-80% of houses. I was under the assumption the project should of put an end to "port waiting"

The FTTN project has essentially meant an end to port waiting.

In the case of the OP it's not a FTTN cabinet. As posted above the cabinet will be replaced with a FTTN whisper cabinet as part of the RBI rollout.

It looks exactly like a FTTN cabinet, so why does it only have a ADSL 1 DSLAM in it then? I haven't heard of whisper cabnets with ADSL 1 DSLAMs.

Eaton and Shape technology have made cabinets for Chorus/Telecom for a number of years. The Whisper cabinet was merely an evolved design, and there are actually a number of these same or similar cabinet designs around that aren't part of the FTTN deployment.
