That said, my soon-to-be ISP seems to think that this will not be an issue (I re-confirmed with a second person there today). Also, they have said that in their experience master filters / splitters tend to cause more problems than they fix...

WOW, they really said that ? and someone confirmed it! I suggest you take the advise of people like sbiddle. I can not believe that anyone would say such a thing, its so wrong its ridiculous.

Yea i am surprised they said that as well. Installing a splitter is always the best option for DSL no matter what.

I guess it depends who you get. I made a couple of calls and they said I definatly need a splitter with of without POTS.

OK i've read the thread but tonight i have brainfade. We currently have a Telecom phoneline and ADSL coming into the house on one pair which then comes into a filter and splits the connection to a pair to the dsl modem and a pair to the phone lines. (i had thought we had 2 pairs connected) We are moving to Snap VDSL at the end of the week and at this point i've asked Snap to make the vdsl connection but leave our phoneline connected until the number is ported to 2talk. Is this going to work ( assuming we will need a vdsl filter rather than the existing adsl one ?) or will i need to get it done differently ?

That should work fine but for the best performance you will need to upgrade your master filter to a VDSL2 capable one if it was installed more than 2 years ago and uses an original MM3200 which is only ADSL/ADSL2+ rated.

Is there any real difference between a $30 'Dynamix' splitter and any other splitters available (not that I can find any!)

Also, could someone please confirm to me that installing a splitter does NOT require running a new cable to the designated xDSL socket?

To follow this up, I have some clarification from my ISP-to-be re the installation of a splitter on new VDSL connections. Basically, in order to avoid having clients automatically pay the $400 wiring fee, the ISP advises that clients have the option of not paying the wiring fee, however, they should bear in mind that without this there may be issues and the speed attained may not be optimal. Subsequently, if the client is unhappy with the speed / stability of the VDSL connection, then they can arrange to have Chorus come and do the $400 wiring, or get someone else to do it.

I also asked for clarification on what the $400 'wiring fee' that Chorus charge covers, and was told that this covers the installation of a splitter only. IMO, that's a complete ripoff considering the cost of the splitter and the labour involved!

Can anyone recommend someone in South Auckland who can install a splitter for a more reasonable price?

We get switched over to Snap on Friday and i have swapped several emails with the v helpful Snap helpdesk. What i had planned to do above is fine as sbiddle confirmed and when i checked the adsl filter more closely it is actually a vdsl one, the house is new (6mths old) and i did all the wiring with the electrician. I have none the less picked up a VDSL2 version today for the princely sum of $21 from an electrical wholesaler and wiill swap that over tomorrow. Snap have offered me a deal to port our number to them and keep a POTS line but we also have a Wellington number and i think we will get them both ported to 2Talk unless i hear of a better plan.

Not quite correct. $399 should cover a complete new install w/o POTS to a new dedicated xDSL jackpoint. You won't get a splitter for this because it's not needed.

It costs $199 for connection + wiring with POTS which will include a splitter if it's a POTS line.

As for $399 being a ripoff it's clear you've never had to perform a full install in a house or understand the costs involved in truck rolls.

As for installs in Auckland coffeebaron is the man to contact.

What I said was that $400 is a ripoff for a simple splitter install. If it actually includes running a new dedicated line then that's a bit more justifiable. At this point I have conflicting information as to what the $400 actually covers so the jury is still out, however, my ISP checked with Chorus and they were told that it covers the installation of a splitter only.

Anyway, I decided to do a bit of 'residential archeology' and see how my wiring was configured. Turns out the main feed from the street effectively connects to one jack point downstairs, and then from that jack point to the 2 other points in the house. In the process of pulling the jack off the wall I accidentally disconnected one of the lines, which saves me from working out which is which as the net was still up :D So I've disconnected the 2nd wire from the unused jack and left it at that for now.

The question I have is, in my current config (main feed to 1st jack, 1st jack to 2nd jack), will there be any reflections from the very short 'wire' in the 1st jack? Do I really need to take the 1st jack out of the circuit altogether and just connect the DSL jack directly to the incoming feed?

You could try it with the way it is currently it won't hurt it to do so but I would imagine it will still give you issues.

Try it with and then without and see what happens.
You should be able to notice a minor difference with ADSL but it will be more obvious with a VDSL circuit.
