Looks like they have started the switch off a week early.  We have some straggler devices on 2D 2G and most off them went offline this morning.

I;ve been seeing emergancy calls only on my second 2g only sim a lot more over the last few days so somethings afoot early. Even at work saw it drop off the network, sit for a while, come back on emerg calls only, and then 5 mins later find 2 degrees again and back to full signal.

Me to dad (last week): Did you get a text message from 2Degrees, letting you know they're switching off the 2G network, and that you might need a new phone?

Dad: err, not sure?

Me: Let's just have a look.

Dad: Oh yes, there it is. (message actually received quite some time ago)

Me: So, new phone then?

Dad: Looks like it. Shall we go and have a look at Noel Leeming etc?

Job done. Cheap Samsung J1 sourced. It'll do the trick, for now at least.

Roll on to Wednesday this week, and dad receives a call from 2Degrees, asking if he knew of the approaching decommissioning of the 2D network. He advised that he was, and due to this had just purchased a new phone.

2Degrees respond with: Oh? We just called to say we're sending you a new phone, for free. Should we just send it anyway?

.......yell

How did you come to that conclusion? Vodafone have a lot more spectrum to play with than 2D

Vodafone already have a shed loads of sites with 4G 700 1800 2100 2600Mhz sites live

2G impact on Vodafone is likely to be far less severe as according the RSM database VF have more 900Mhz spectrum (VF = 16.2 MHz, 2DM 9.8 MHz (less guard bands etc)).

Cause you said that the 3G/4G side of the Two degrees network will benefit from 2G closing down so I put 2 and 2 together.

Keeping 2G on will no doubt cost Vodafone extra money in support and maintenance keeping a certain amount of old gear running than they'd really like. But the reason they are keeping it running is because they have so many wireless device fleet customers with 2G modems (think vending machines, smart meters, GPS trackers and so on) which their owners would need to spend 6 or 7-figure sums to upgrade. If they are forced to upgrade anyway, then it's also natural to go looking at alternative providers.

Thus it's worth the relatively small marginal support cost to keep those fleet customers.

iPad Pro 11" + iPhone 15 Pro Max + 2degrees 4tw!

These comments are my own and do not represent the opinions of 2degrees.

Well it looks like 2G has not been turned off today - rather they turned off a bunch of SIMs that should not have !  Oops

The logical upgrade for those straggler IOT devices to go to is LTE-M IOT stuff, which I only seem to remember one of the telcos was talking about implimenting some time ago. By the time 2g is finally taken out the back and shot, there should be more better options to move to with lower power and not constantly losing data on a conjested network like happens on the 2 and 3g networks.

I've started a new thread to track the progress of the shut down to save bombing this one.

If you're interested, https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=85&topicid=231826

EDIT: Pretty irrelevant, shut down appears to have started at midnight (Auckland report) and was off in Carterton by 2am so presumably is complete now?

I thought I was going to be able to be cheeky and have a go at @2degreescare for the coverage map being inaccurate but no, they've done well! Nice.
